Biography

Ekaterina
The Physician
Chief of Medicine | Open-Minded | Visionary
Loyalty: Theia

"There is a balance in harming and healing."

Ekaterina was born in the Scarred Wasteland, a direct descendant of the ruling family of clan Skemmdeljott. Observant and intelligent, she realised through the conflicts of her family and of the rotting land around her that there was healing in destruction. Armed with a healthy dose of confidence and willpower - and then with a newly obtained medical degree - Ekaterina began developing remedies and antidotes derived from the contagion around her. More surprising than her visionary idea was the fact that it worked.

The results of her hard work humbled her more than anything. She began to see how beautiful it was that the land had so much to offer, and began to have a deep and profound respect for those like Margaery, who even with so few opportunities have managed to extract something from their experiences. Ekaterina works as the Chief of Medicine, under Kodiak's Ministry of Internal Affairs, tasked with organising the health-keeping efforts of the clan. This also involves keeping a keen eye on Gabriel, much to his distaste. She takes her job very seriously and will often be found fretting over minor mishaps. Luckily, her proficiency in what she does keeps her stable and running.

Though she fiercely misses her home and her family, Ekaterina has managed to adapt brilliantly to life at Verglas Shores, where she is respected and admired by her clanmates.

History

There is some beauty in the Plaguebringer's ghastly mess. Something wonderfully alive about the stretching rot and the bubbling ooze of the Wyrmwound and how the spreading contagion reaches for the tallest peaks and the deepest valleys. And in the same way an antivenom is created from its source, the Scarred Wasteland holds an uncanny potential for healing.

Ekaterina was born amidst these scars. A descendant of the ruling family of the Skemmdeljott clan, she had learned that the best way to deal with the bloodline she inherited was to keep to herself - and out of the others' ways. So she shed no tears during her mother's griefstricken episodes, and twisted broken grass blades around her claws during Fanndis' funeral, never once daring look into Alba's eyes, and she had continued to eat her dinner when a particularly nasty brawl ended with Angharad's flight from their lair. But just like the broken land around them, her family managed to rebuild and recompose and each time they fell apart, their bonds regrew, stronger than ever.

Though she tried, and the Plaguebringer Herself knows she tried, Ekaterina was not satisfied by sneaking into Alba's laboratory to test her theories or by stealing cuttings from Ahmicqui's carefully tended garden to see how long they'd survive in the acidic soils. She had read the correct literature and scrolls imported from the Starfall Isles and the Viridian Labyrinth, but they were still not enough. There was something missing, a link her mind could not wrap around. And she knew where she could build her foundations before developing her own ideas. Convincing her father to allow her to move to the Sunbeam Ruins - where the most prestigious medical schools could be found and were keen to receive foreign dragons after the fall of the Inquisition of Light - was a whole other issue. But unable to refuse his daughter's wishes, Ryukyu gave his blessing.

It was not an easy ordeal, graduating as a daughter of the Plaguebringer amidst the Lightweaver's offspring, but she found kind faces in her class, that also had ambitions beyond the treasure and status that came with their degree. And though her closest friends flew from their homes in search of their causes, Ekaterina went back to hers, with a newfound sense of purpose.

She finally understood how to take the plague that surrounded her and use it to heal. She experimented enough with the mutagens of the spreading contagion to create new antidotes and medicines. She found new strains of evolving bacteria and gave them purpose beyond sickness. And the harder she worked, the more she found herself dedicated to her craft. She gained newfound respect for apothecaries and alchemists, who saw possibilities in the world around them and aimed to make more of it, and newfound love for her family, who tried to understand in the best manner they could.

It was Angharad who told her to go to Verglas Shores. She had seen the state of the old stead, and knew that in Theia and Kodiak's plans for reform, her sister would be an honourable addition. And beyond her expertise, Ekaterina could send Angharad's best conciliatory wishes to Theia.

Ekaterina arrived soon after news had reached Kodiak and they had been prepared. Bestowed with her own laboratory, she continued to develop her life's work in transforming the blemishing properties of plague into agents of cure. Beyond this, she serves as Verglas Shores' main physician.
