Biography

Handles the jams, jellies, and pickles of the bakery. A very private dragon, Abiah lives on one of the many floating islands that make up the focal point. Since he deals with a lot of produce, he and Perrin are very close. Closer, in fact, than most of their friends know. While Abiah is rather slow to warm up to someone, when he does, he's very outspoken and will talk about anything.

Abiah breathed in the steam from the canning bath, hoping it would soothe his sore throat. He had been feeling sick for a little while now, and had spent most of the day in bed. But the night was perfect to pick glowberries, and he hadn't been able to resist. They were a fascinating fruit-- like the blueberries of the lower islands, but more delicately sweet, and so bright white that they shone like stars in the moonlight. He had gathered baskets of them with the grace of the moon to guide him. The island his cottage was built on was full of glowberry bushes, and he had cultivated them through the years to make it easier to walk through. Perrin would have been horrified at the zigzag, haphazard way he had cut through the foliage, but gardening had never been his strongest suit. Now that the sun was rising and the berries were less visible, he was able to do his best work.

The recipe was a simple one; honey and sugar for sweetness, some lemon juice for acidity, cardamom and vanilla to taste. He had washed the berries and spread them out to dry off on some towels while he prepared the canning bath and the jars. It took a lot out of him; he was sicker than he cared to admit. He had worried about contaminating the jam, but the possibility was slim to none, considering the boiling process that it went through. And the seal would kill anything trapped in the jars anyway.

So he stirred the mixture as the sun slowly rose, crushing the berries against the side of the pot as they warmed, hoping the heat of the fire would help chase away his chill. By the time the jam was almost ready, and the canning bath was prepped, his eyelids were drooping in exhaustion. He looked over to his bedroom with longing, suppressing a yawn.

A knock at the door startled him, and he swallowed the yawn, calling, "Who's there?"

A familiar voice drifted in through the wood. "It's just Perrin! I've come to check on you. A little birdy told me you were out gathering fruit last night, I wanted to get a look at what you're making."

Abiah smiled despite himself, leaving his bubbling jam to open his front door. The sight of the Wildclaw only widened his smile, and that made Perrin smile too. They stared at each other for just a moment before Perrin stepped forward, gently nosing the side of Abiah's face in a chaste greeting. "I know you're a little sick, so I was worried about you as well. How are you holding up, dear?"

The affection in his voice was clear, and Abiah's heart warmed to hear it. He turned back to the stove, hoping he didn't sound too terrible. "Oh, I've been better. Mostly tired, is all. The bushes were just so full last night, I couldn't help but pick some glowberries. I'm making that jam you like, with the cardamom?"

Perrin peered over his shoulder at the mixture, humming in happiness. Abiah leaned back into him, savoring the contact, loving the way Perrin smelled. The wildclaw sniffed the jam, nodding. "Oh, my favorite! You know just how to treat me, Abiah. I was craving this just the other day, on some of that sweet bread that Kladeos made... I should bring you a loaf today, I'm sure you could use some to help you get over this little cold. You sound terrible, by the way. Have you asked Gouda for any medicine?"

Abiah huffed, turned the heat off and moving the large pot to the jarring station. Perrin set himself up to pour the jam into the jars without asking; Abiah flicked his tail against the Wildclaw's leg in thanks, and Perrin smiled at him in return. Abiah held the canning funnel over the first jar, watching as Perrin poured, and said, "No, I haven't. I know I probably should, but I just don't feel like it's that big of a deal. I just have a sore throat, a stuffy nose, a little fever. It's not like I'm bleeding from the eyes. I'll get over it soon enough."

His answer made Perrin frown, and Abiah sighed. "But if it makes you happy, yes, I'll ask him. Tell you the truth, I am a little sick of being so tired all the time. I have a lot of strawberries in the fridge I have to process, and it's so hard to do that when all you want to do is nap." He paused, switching the funnel to the next jar, and continued talking once he had found the lid to the now full jar of jam. "But enough complaining. How's your garden doing? You're on the south side today, right? Have you found anything interesting in the ground yet? I'm still hoping you'll turn out some more of that pottery like last time."

Perrin expertly tapered his pour, stopping just below the rim of the jar, and took a breath. "Actually, I found a pretty big lump of metal in the soil yesterday. It's all smooth and it looks melted, so I think it fell from the sky. I took it down to the lair and let the hatchlings play with it a little. Other than that, no, I haven't turned up any pottery or any weird buried teeth or even the lower half of that skull I found. I was a little disappointed, actually. The south field always seemed so wild, I was hoping there would be more... more secrets, I guess."

They were almost a third done now, with not a drop spilled. Perrin was Abiah's favorite helper for that very reason. Well, that was one of the reasons. He gave excellent kisses, too, but that was more a perk than anything else. Abiah coughed into his shoulder, following it with a yawn that showed most of his teeth. Perrin whistled. "You really need to lie down, don't you? Why don't you go do that after we seal these, and I can put them into the canner and finish all this up."

Abiah glared (halfheartedly) at the Wildclaw. "I'm not that tired, Perrin. I think I can manage a little more."

Perrin rolled his eyes. "Right. So when you fall asleep at the sink trying to wash the jam out of this pot and drown, don't blame me. I can see your eyelids closing right now."

Abiah narrowed his eyes, fighting the urge to close them all the way, and muttered, "Fine. If it makes you happy, I'll go lie down, AFTER I put the first batch into the canner. Fair?"

He wasn't pushing back nearly as hard as he usually did, too tired for banter, and Perrin knew not to gloat too much. He just changed his grip on the pot of jam and started to hum softly.

When they had finished, filling all the jars (and a little container for Perrin to take home), Abiah lowered the first batch into the canner, watching with satisfaction as they sank below the boiling water. Perrin prodded him gently, and the Pearlcatcher sighed, letting his boyfriend lead him to the bedroom. He climbed into bed, muttering under his breath as Perrin tried to tuck him in, and accepted a kiss on the forehead with begrudging love. He was asleep before Perrin reached the door, already starting to snore, and the Wildclaw looked at him fondly before going to the kitchen to finish what they had started.
