Mute. That's what Jex understood very quickly. He would never be able to talk.
But his ears. They are absolutely wonderful. He can hear everything, everywhere! From the sound of the rain far from his lair to the small discreet sound of a mouse's heart.

This Gaoler, still young was designed by Bone, the leader of Claw Clan, to be the new guardian of their lands. With no hesitation, Jex accepted the job and is now the proud listener of the Claw Clan.

-Hello, Jex, are the lands quiet today?

The young Gaoler nodded without moving his eyes from the tall rocks, shining under the morning sun. Bone smiled at the young listener and offered him a big rabbit for Jex's work.

-You can go rest for now. I'll make sure that the lands are safe.

Once again, the piebald dragon nodded, then grabbed the dead prey and flew to his lair. He quickly ate, sharing his gift with his sister, Serifys, then went to sleep.

He was haunted by a nightmare. Jex felt himself flying away from a strong, thick, black smoke. Something was howling with strenght in his ears and the poor dragon could hear dozens of cries for help coming from his friends. A sudden heat surprised the dragon. The nightmare was too strong, too real. The shouts... they were real!

"There's a fire!" he tried to shout, only realizing he was now fully awake.

He jumped off his bed, running as fast as he could on his short legs, before he took off in the sky. There, he saw the shades of red, yellow and orange. The Fire clan was everywhere! The ennemies were throwing flames at the Claw clan! There! Jex, saw Puff and Glimmer, fighting side to side against two awful Ridgebacks. The Gaoler felt worried for the female Mirror, as she was waiting two young baby dragons. The small punch they were gibing inside the belly of their mother, resonated in Jex's ears.

The sound of millions of small tongues of fire devoring the wood, the fur, the flesh and the skin suddenly attacked his senses. The whole camp was screaming in agony. The whole camp was invaded by the flames, whispering on the rocks and eating everything they could. All these sounds, this was too much for Jex.

If he would've stayed awake a little bit longer, Claw Clan could have avoided all that!

Just before he fainted, the Gaoler heard Kerubi's desperate shout. Her children were nowhere to be found.
