The youngest of the four Fae sisters by a single day, Riptide has always been a bit of a strange character. Though that shouldn’t be surprising, considering her preferred hobby involves diving for fish underneath several miles of unforgiving sea. Perhaps the danger would have been justified if she were the one eating her catch, but Riptide leaves that privilege for whoever is fortunate enough to come by her stall. When she isn’t somewhere deep below the tides, that is.

There is a difference, some would say, between confident action and utter absent-mindedness, and Riptide has walked this fine line since the day she was hatched. The Fae’s approach to a problem that needed solved was formulaic and methodical, but in the exact way most likely to give her parents the scare of a lifetime. There was always a single beat of silence as she weighed her options, then full throttle commitment to whatever idea registered as the best or most efficient path, with no room at all left for doubt.

Her swift intuition and quick action was not seen as such by her clan mates who were all too quick to label her as brash and foolish. The calamitous chorus of ’What were you thinking!?’ was always met with an explanation, and a good one at that, but it never seemed to be enough; the members of her clan were intent on delivering judgement, not finding understanding. It was her former clan’s loss at the end of the day. The Fae had come to the conclusion that the Tidelord was keeping her future hidden elsewhere, but he would not be able to hide it forever. Not from Riptide. The prospect of leaving one’s clan in search of who-knows-what would have been terrifying to most, but Riptide was never one to let the world act before she did.

Riptide continued to prove herself the exception to the rule even after she became a part of the market. While it’s true that most of the Tidelord’s children have a natural affinity for the tides, once they leave his domain, they are quick to take up flying and soon prefer it to other methods of travel. Even after several months at the marketplace, Riptide never did. In fact, she’ll often diverge from the clan’s standard routes of travel, making most of the journey through winding rivers rather than trodden paths.

Her adoptive sisters understand that this is simply a part of who she is, as well as convenient ammunition for their never ending feud, often claiming that Riptide refuses to travel with the rest because she is ashamed at how poor her stock looks in comparison. The retort, swift and clean, is always something akin to her unwillingness to breathe the same air as such inferior merchants. On and on the bickering goes, as reliable as the high tide.

The sister’s constant arguing is nothing but sound and fury; the words they trade hold no venom and simply stand as a way to pass the time and keep the mind sharp. The words that truly matter to Riptide however are the ones of greeting she returns to at the end of a long trip out to sea. The mantra of ’Where have you been?’, ’Shouldn’t you know better?’, and ’How foolish can you be?’ had been replaced by ’Welcome back! I see you plan on bringing the whole ocean into my stall!’, ’Did you bring me back a present that won’t take my claw off?’, or ’By the Eleven, you smell like the Wyrmwound!’. Though the words seem sharp, they are completely devoid of the distrust Riptide had faced from her former clan. A distrust that would soon be rekindled once she slipped the worst of her catch into one of their nests.
