She was absolutely gorgeous. Beautiful. Stunning. All the boys loved her. All the girls hated her. And then it was torn away, ripped from her with scorching hot claws that slashed her flesh and shredded her heart.
It started with one single patch.
The vain hatchling was admiring herself in the mirror, as usual, when she noticed the darkened spot on one wing. She first rubbed at the mirror, but the spot moved with her reflection. Curious and concerned, the dragon rubbed at her shiny wing, but the dull spot wouldn’t go. The hatchling dipped her wing in the sink, and the spot protested by tingling and itching and turning a deep green. That won’t go unnoticed, the hatchling thought with rising panic, though the spot was really only a speck and was invisible to others. Now weary, the hatchling settled to rest, hoping, begging, praying to the Shadowbinder to make the spot go away.
When she awoke the next morning, the hatchling realized with a shock that her prayers must have reached the Plaguebringer instead of the Shadowbinder, as the spot had grown to a border along her wing, spreading up through her veins and disappearing. The hatchling stayed inside that day, crying selfish tears.
The next day was sunny, warm, and incredibly itchy. The deep green had spread across the dragon’s entire body, and she hid under her blanket, whimpering and hoping nobody would see her.
The day after this was the day an admirer decided to visit the once-beautiful dragon, bringing a bouquet of flowers that he thought matched her beautiful blue wings. When nobody answered the doorbell, he found the door unlocked and let himself in. He heard the raspy voice of a sick dragon and decided to give the flowers to the suffering, even if it wasn’t his crush. He followed the sobbing to the hatchling’s room, finding her shivering under a blanket. The he-dragon tapped the she-dragon’s shoulder through the blanket and handed her the bouquet.
A rotting green claw reached from the blankets and snatched the flowers, which immediately shriveled and died in her grasp.
