Mortimer was a very weak and tiny dragon ever since hatching. He was not even big enough to be considered the 'runt of the litter.' He was born to be around the size of a toy dragon and it didn't look like he would be growing out of it. Instead of taking this as a disadvantage in the Southern Icefield, he actually took it as more of an advantage. The young Wildclaw actually thought he was special, not disabled.

Sure, instead of eating meat relentlessly like a normal wildclaw, Mortimer had to settle for insects and that wasn't too good for his diet, but animals with meat were so big! He usually got full on just one insect.
