Biography

&
Dream and Nightmare Grams
A young dragon blinks up at you with big chocolate-colored eyes, her head tilted to one side. “Do you want to go on an adventure?” she asks. When you nod, she reaches out a claw, and the world shimmers into starlight.
You find yourselves staring into glassy crystal. The surface is so clear, you can see your own scales reflected in the dim light of fireflies. Shards of crystal stretch up into the open sky, glimmering in moonlight. Gemstones dot the faceted surfaces of the room, sending holographic rainbows spiraling at the edge of your vision. Eyes sparkling, the other dragon flares her wings and begins to dance. As you watch the blur of her white markings, from somewhere deep inside, you realize that you recognize these movements. In each other, you realize the joy of living; with each other, you dance like the world is your ballroom. Steps matching, claws tapping, the feeling of freedom bursts out of you in mesmerizing, breath-taking spins. The freedom of the night wraps around you like a hug, turning the dance into a blissful haze.

You open your eyes with a start to realize that you’re not where you thought you were. The world is dark and you can barely see. A chill comes over you as you stumble your way to your feet.
Obsidian walls surround you, rising up to the ceiling. When you touch one of them, you pass through into a corridor of the same rock walls… you realize with a sinking feeling that you’re stuck in a maze.
Heart pounding, you begin to run, your claws skittering against stone. The fear of being trapped forever slowly sinks in, turning your mind to mush. The more panicked you get, the harder you try to run, but the darkness all looks the same and you begin to feel as if you haven’t moved at all.
At last you collapse, panting and out of breath. The rough-hewn floor is cool against your scales, a welcome relief after your mad dash through the halls. You feel your eyes get heavy and drop into a deep, dreamless sleep.

When your eyes open, you realize that something is very, very wrong. But you’re not quite sure what until you’ve managed to scramble to your feet. Your feet are webbed, and green. Everything is too big, the colors are all wrong, and you’re slimy. You try to shake off the weird moisture when a large, rectangular pupil comes close.
You jump in shock, bouncing higher up in the air than you expected to. The fall back down is painful. You fall onto your belly, making a choked croaking noise.
“You’ve been cursed,” the owner of the pupil rumbles. You can only see the glistening spring green of her underbelly. “You can never be a dragon again unless you receive a shed scale as a symbol of friendship from a dragon.” She pauses to laugh, a hissing, awful sound. “Good luck with that, since most dragons will eat you!” With that, she spreads her wings and flings herself into the air. The flapping blows you this way and that, sending you careening off the lilypad you were sitting on.
You fall with a splash into the water, desperately flinging your legs around, trying to re-learn how to swim in this new skin. But the water silences your thoughts, and almost involuntarily, you go limp. Your eyes close once more, and you find yourself in a deep, dreamless sleep.

Your eyes blink open to find that he is shifting by your side. “Mr. Fluffy?” you murmur, heavy with sleep.
“Yes,” the teddy bear replies gently, his fur warm against your scales.
Suddenly, you are wide awake. “I didn’t know you could talk.”
He laughs quietly and hugs you around the tail. “I can talk, and sing, and dance! But only for tonight. So let’s have some fun,” he pleads, and looks at you with big brown eyes.
“Okay,” you agree.
“Yay!” your teddy squeals, and bustles about the lair. “Oh, this is going to be such fun!” You can’t help but smile at his enthusiasm.
You play chase around the lair, laughing with joy whenever Mr. Fluffy hugs you around the ankle. Then you play hide and seek, sticking your snout into tiny crevices to catch the giggling bear. You build a pillow fort and snuggle under blankets to talk late into the night, exchanging jokes and stories like newfound hatchlings. Mr. Fluffy brings out a guitar and sings you a song. The sounds of music and laughter fill the room. Warmth from the fire and the comfort of your friendship turns the night into a blissful haze.

You awaken in a wagon, cheerily rumbling. The smells of fresh flowers and tree leaves waft in. Streams of sunlight illuminate dancing dust motes in the air. You lean into a long, leisurely stretch before stopping the wagon and making your way outside.
It’s sunset, and the sun is a blazing red presence on the edge of the sky. You’re stopped in the middle of a big meadow that seems to stretch forever. Strawberry pink clouds float in eternally blue sky. You lay down on soft grass, daydreaming. Butterflies skim past you, dancing playfully past your snout. You unwrap a cake to munch down on, letting flavors soak into your soul. It’s sweet and thick with honey, warm and filling. When you are thirsty, you find a quietly bubbling creek to sip from. The water cools your throat, refreshing to the touch.
Everything is quiet in this moment, and all responsibility is melted off by the sun. There is nothing more you need to do but rest and relax. Lost in the feeling of safety and peace, you find yourself dozing into a blissful haze.

It was hard work harvesting crops. You thought you were going to take a little nap, but when your eyes open, you are underground, surrounded by dirt and skittering insects. “Where… where am I?”
A dragon stares at you with unnerving rectangular pupils. Her scales drag through the dirt, sending dust flying into the air. You choke and cough, feeling it burrow into your lungs. “You have intruded upon my land,” the dragon hisses. “Time to pay up.”
“Wait, what do you mean? I haven’t done anything…”
“SILENCE!” She trails a single claw across your face and gives you a toothy grin. It leaves something cold and wet on your scales. “You may not leave… you must serve me ‘till the end of days…”
Too scared to speak, you hold still, paralyzed with fear.
Her cackle is muffled by the walls, but you feel it deep in your chest. The thrumming rumble sends dirt spraying down from the ceiling, and the entire cavern begins to shake. You scramble for purchase, desperately clinging to the rock walls. Dirt cascades all around you, covering the world in a shower of boulders. The world goes dark and you find yourself deep in a dreamless sleep.b4c0db0837093e91bcea9ac2e817d42c093e861e.png
