Even from a young age it seemed his mother knew he would be an obstinate, problematic dragon. She named the snow leopard-like hatchling Apinin, meaning rebel in an ancient tongue. She was certainly right when she thought obstinate, for he would listen and obey no dragon. As for problematic, well, that issue manifested at a slower pace. His mother began to notice her son's excitement over blood and violence. She began to feel a deep concern and sickness fall over her.

Soon Apinin became well known among the other hatchlings as being a viscous and ruthless fighter. As he continued to grow, his mother became sicker and sicker with worry. Many of the other mothers were concerned for her health. As his mother became small and frail, Apinin grew large and powerful. It was clear to the rest of the Gaolers that he would become a strong asset if trained and put in place. If he could follow orders and become loyal, no prisoners would ever escape the Gaolers' grasp.

Apinin began his training as a Keeper soon after he had fully grown. He was drilled and worked like many of the other young Gaolers in the order. He seemingly outdid every single one of them, however. He proved himself to be faster, stronger, more agile, and a near perfect soldier. That is, he would have been if it weren't for his violent actions and stubbornness. No matter how hard the instructors tried to get into his head that he was to capture intruders and to destroy the Shade and not them, he still showed extreme aggression towards most anything. The elder Gaolers became more concerned as Apinin seemed to become more set in his ways. They feared that he could be the very undoing of the Icewarden and generations of Gaoler's hard work. Perhaps the younger and more foolish ones shrugged it off as Apinin being a little too enthusiastic about his job. The elders did not see it that way...
