Coatls- the children of the flamecaller. Bright, blazing, and beautiful- as a species coatls are renowned for their fiery personalities, their brilliant plumage, and their everlasting ties to their ancestral home.

In her youth, Bird soaked in the stories, the history, and the traditions of her inborn breed. Coatls. Her kind.

And the kind which abandoned her- left her out to die.

Bird wasn’t born with the colors of the sun. When she emerged from her egg, bright glaring whiteness coated her tiny body. She was unnaturally chilled- small icicles formed around the hatchling’s feet as she quietly emerged from her egg- soundless.

Seeing this pale, unnaturally bright hatchling, some innate instinct must have overtaken her parents. Pale children were sick, evil omens. She had to be disposed of to protect the rest of their brood.

Bird held not even a shadow of a memory of her birth parents. All she knew was, soon after her birth, she had been left alone and exposed within an open clearing- weak and helpless against the full wrath of the boundless sky.

Clouds raced over her tiny head, time seemed to race past her and yet stand still. The world fluxed and flowed around her, and yet the child waited there, motionless, for what could have been eternity.

The chill of the earth was slowly working its way into her. Her very bones seemed to turn to ice, her blood the temperature of an winter rain. And she drifted- alive yet ageless.

Somehow, she was found. Some may describe her discovery as a rescue- that her life had been saved- but somehow Bird knew she wouldn’t have died. She felt no hunger, no fear, and no pain in that clearing- it had been her sanctuary, her private temple. It was only after she had been pulled from it that Bird became acquainted with the stab of pain, the hollowness of hunger, and the aches of emotion and loss.

Sometimes she wondered if it would have been better if she could have stayed in that place. Years after her rescue, she tried to return to her clearing- but when she found it, it wasn’t the same. Time ticked by as normal, and the oppressive brutality of the earth had seeped in. There was no more magic in that place, it was only what it was- an empty clearing.

So, she now wanders. Looking for whatever it was that she had lost, or hoping to lose whatever she had gained.
