The large Ridgeback female sits at her position in front of the cave, her star-like scales glimmering. Opal, her little Fae apprentice, flits about asking annoying questions as always. She swishes her tail to the other side of her body, the Fae flying back at her movement.
"Beryl! You're gonna crush me if you move without warning like that!" She chided.
"Opal, please try and learn something if you want to be my apprentice. If an enemy faces the clan, you're not going to fight well if you're scared of something as benign as a Ridgeback moving her tail."
Opal pouted and whined. "I'm gonna go scout the area!" She flew off, almost falling from the weight of her armor.
"She's not going to last a day in real combat." She muttered, watching the young crystalline Fae fly off, shaking her head.

Beryl had always dedicated to herself to one purpose. One goal. One duty. When she was forced to leave behind that duty, she ran away. Beryl was the bodyguard of a powerful dragon in her old clan, but they were overrun by the beastclans, and she fled. Having traveled much too far, at her wit's end and her last resort, she'd retired to the fact she was a failure. She didn't deserve any sort of respite. But that respite came anyway when a Skydancer found her. Heled her to the Clan, where she was reluctant to socialize with any other dragon. She was a failure, after all. The others finally managed to coax her into doing something, and she became the guard of the clan. She saw many dragons come and go, keeping her position at the gate, ever watching, ever waiting, ever alone.
One day, a little Fae was discovered abandoned. As she grew, she was always watching and admitting Beryl. Her shimmering body and wings always gleaming as bright as her eyes. Beryl pretended to dislike her, but really took quite a liking to the little Fae. The little dragon became her apprentice, which was more just an excuse for Beryl to protect her. She'd found her purpose. Protecting Opal, the little Fae wannabe guard.
