WysteriaXXXXXSpirit of the Woods
Midnight Rose

There are stories, of the worlds in the gap. Of the places where the mists transform the familiar into the alien, and eternity is merely a transient dream. It is the home of the Wisps and the Fey, as much the pranksters in the Wood as the watching eyes in the dark. When one enters, they must be sure to make an offering, of honey, a treasure, and a secret, lest the shifting shadows and murky fog claim them. One does not exit the Woods without paying a price.

A bet, a whim, or perhaps a gift for the one she fancied led a hatchling into the Tangled Wood. When her elders told her of the home of the hidden beings, she laughed, deeming it merely another amusing fable. The warnings only stoked her curiosity, wondering what secrets the Fey have hidden away in the land between. Under the glowing light of the moon, when the dark closed the eyes of those who watched her, she slipped down the leaf-dappled path.

Standing amongst the whispering woods, she marveled at the beauty of the forest, with its curling trees and luminescent flora. It possessed an otherworldly tranquility, crickets and the rustling of game creating the subtle melody of life. As she moved deeper, the fog descended upon the path, embracing her in their ethereal grasp. Still she pushed on, the glowing wisps of fireflies lighting the way.

The bushes and flowers turned to bramble and thorns, the long shadows stretching and contorting. The comforting music of life seemed muted, softer and softer, a distant whisper. Even the fireflies dimmed, going out one by one, until only the smallest wisps of light was left. She paused, looking around for the way she came, but it had already been swallowed by the mists.

Warily she continued, step by step, tensed to flee into the bush. Yet, there was nothing but her unsteady steps, the rhythm of her breath. The path seemed to close in, narrowing smaller, as if the forest itself was drawing her in. As she pushed past a wall of bramble, the thorns pricking her scales, she arrived at an open clearing, the tree covers parting to reveal the night sky. She could feel the breeze caressing her face, and even the thick fog seemed to part in reverence of this glade. She laid down, breathing in the cool, open air. As she did so, her eye was drawn to the center of the clearing, and she gasped. A gorgeous, glimmering rose, shining in the dim light. It glowed starkly against the grey vines and thorns it was nestled in, drawn to the gentle rays of moonlight that graced the earth. She approached it, admiring the elegant bloom, the alluring siren song of mystic treasure and hidden beauty calling to her soul. With nary a second thought, she plucked it, eager to make it hers.

That moment, the wind seemed to pick up, rustling the leaves in the trees. She whipped around, but saw nothing but the bushes pushed ajar. As she stared, she swore that the leaves were smiling with mirthful glee. A chill ran down her spine, and she rushed off, eager to escape back to her warm nest, her loving family, back to the world she knew. Yet, no matter how she walked, ran, or turned, there was no way out. Darker and darker, even the stars seemed so far away. She screamed and cried, but her sorrows only fed the bramble, and the noise was whisked away by the winds. When the earth of the forest had stolen all her tears, and her legs could carry her no longer, all she could do was lay down underneath the shelter of the leaf cover, and wait for the guiding light of day.

When the sun rose in the Wood, there was naught left but a small patch of crimson blooms where she once stood.

Some stories say that she still stalks those woods, now one with the gnarled bushes and whispering winds. If you walk the path, and hear laughter in the trees, make an offering, and follow the red roses. The spirit of the woods wishes to guide you back home, to the world that was taken away for her.
