Haste

Olhaza fulfills his impulsive nature by feeding his endless appetite for adventure. He's a natural wanderer with a keen sense of direction and knack for survival. However, this often puts him in situations where his overconfidence gets a swift reality check in the form of very imminent danger. His wanderlust makes him much more comfortable in solitary situations but he does enjoy the fact that he's able to rely on his friends and companions to help him do things he never could alone. He has a problem with established authority and he refuses to follow any rules or orders he thinks are stupid. Just like in exploring, this habit of his sometimes puts himself and his party in danger more often than not. He has little ambition in terms of money or fame and he instead finds discovery to be the greatest treasure that he's paid in; he only aspires to see more of the world each day.

Background

Olhaza gritted his teeth and tried his best to tune out the jeers of the tavern patrons currently pointing and laughing at him. "Ha!" a gaudily dressed Snapper exclaimed, "get a load of the new guy here! Says he take care 'o the shadetouched Yeti he did. Ha!" Olhaza felt heat rush to his ears and cheeks from a mix of irritation and embarrassment and he was glad for the fur that obscured his blushing. "Sorry kid but that monster'd eat you alive, it would." Several of the other tavern patrons nodded in agreement.

"You're wrong," Olhaza grimaced, "I've fought plenty of monsters before."

"Anything shadetouched?" a Fae with tattered fins and a scar across one eye landed atop the Snapper's head and peered toward Olhaza.

"Well, no. But--"

"Ha!" The Fae and Snapper both burst into laughter. In between fits of laughing, the Fae gestured to his scarred eye. "A shadetouched elk did this to me. A Yeti, well, that beast would--"

"Eat ya alive!" the Snapper exclaimed. Both continued laughing and Olhaza wanted no more of the conversation. He had seen the bounty fliers for the successful hunt of the Yeti and had entered the tavern with the intent to ask about its last whereabouts. Instead, he ended up getting laughed right out the door.

He tried to come up with a good comeback as he exited the tavern, but an awkward, "Well, I'll show you!" was all he could muster. Smooth, he thought, you really showed them. He followed the snow covered path out from the village and into the cedar forest that grew thicker as it got farther from civilization. He looked toward several signs all giving a variety of warnings about shade sightings in the area. As he went deeper, these signs grew more sparse but increased in severity. Olhaza didn't feel very bothered, though. He knew how to navigate forests and he'd never met a creature he couldn't subdue. He'd prove those dragons wrong AND collect the bounty.

After about an hour and a half of travel, Olhaza began to recognize signs of a Yeti nearby. He followed marred trees and studied the oddities in the snow until he could tell where the trail started morphing from old footprints to fresh ones. He was close. Very close. Feeling confident now that he was on the right trail, he creeped forward carefully and followed it to a small clearing where he finally caught sight of the giant beast. Its eyes were closed and light snores indicated that it was currently sleeping. It was the perfect opportunity to catch it off guard and end things quickly.

He crept around the tree line and stopped just feet apart from the slumbering beast. He couldn't help but eye the giant's hands and he turned to scope out the best route to lure the Yeti into the trees. That way, he could use them as cover. He nodded in satisfaction, seeing a path of trees just perfect for those sorts of maneuvers when a piercing screech snapped his attention to the beast whose vacant eyes were now open and focused solely on him.

The Yeti roared and swung one fist before the dragon had any time to react. Pain laced his chest as he was sent crashing into one of the trees with enough force to crack and splinter the bark. The monster wasted no time in hobbling toward him with chilling intensity. Olhaza had encountered a Yeti before but this thing was not anything like it. Its eyes lacked any emotion and its focus was only to kill whatever was in its path.

Olhaza got to his feet and counter attacked the beast, nimbly dodging its fists and lunging forward with blows of his own. With every move he felt his own energy start to fade and the ache of the damage he'd taken so far was starting to slow him down. He backed off and began to use spell attacks instead. The monster countered each one with a swift punch of its fist and it closed the distance and began a relentless assault. The dragon returned the attacks in kind.

The Yeti fought with mindless wrath while Olhaza fought with the desperation one only knows when their life is on the edge of ending. Through his pain and exhaustion, he finally landed the deciding blow and the monster fell limp. The dragon felt his trembling legs give way with no more strength to even stand. He could feel his consciousness begin to fade and he knew that the damage he had taken was likely fatal. He would die alone in the woods. But, at least, he'd die proving that annoying Snapper wrong. With the last of his strength, he lifted his head, hoped for a miracle, and shouted, "Is anyone there!? Please help me!" before everything faded to black.

When Olhaza began to awake, he was aware of two things. One, he was probably still alive because his entire body ached like nothing he had felt before. Two, he was no longer in the middle of the forest. He felt the soft, comfortable padding of a bed beneath him and he heard faint voices through the floor. He opened his eyes and caught sight of wooden walls and décor that matched the tavern he had been in before. Was he in one of the spare bedrooms? He tried to lift himself out of the bed but his body wouldn't respond to his efforts. It was then a voice spoke, drawing his attention to the corner of the room where another Gaoler sat looking at him with wide eyes.

"Woah," she said, "you're actually alive!" She had a self-satisfied sort of smile on her face and that irritated Olhaza. With the way he felt, he almost wished he had died.

"Who are you?" he asked.

"Your miracle," she replied with a wide smile and a wink. "I saved you!" Then, her expression turned sympathetic. She stood and picked up a mirror that was resting on a nearby table. "Well, I stopped you from dying. I don't know how to do the hardcore type healing yet, y'know? And you were so far gone that I had to dig into some deep stuff and it kinda... left an impression." She lifted the mirror toward Olhaza.

He gasped slightly as he studied his own expression. His horns were glowing with arcane energy and the remnants of runes had etched themselves into parts of his own fur. He mustered the strength to lift one paw out from the covers and he glanced down to see it, too, was etched and glowing as a byproduct of the spell.

"On the bright side," the other Gaoler said, "there's a Fae downstairs who says he'll buy you a drink if you manage to walk again."

Notes and Fun Facts

  • When Gaolers first came out and we were given the clanbound breed change scrolls, I had the idea of emulating a randomly hatched "Gaoler Egg" by buying whichever two hatchlings (of opposite gender) were listed at the cheapest AH treasure price and breed changing them no matter what their colors were. Olhaza was one of those hatchies. Why didn't I just hatch two g1s instead? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  • Before I migrated my non g1 dragons to the hibden, I accidently leveled him to 7 because he is very much what I'd consider a fodder dragon and I didn't notice it was him I was training. He's a good fodder boy.
