PRIESTESS PERITHENE
78jnewl.png
The Host
In the flora-choked forests at the base of the Behemoth, there are a dozen or more shrines to forgotten gods, minor blips of magic in the grand scheme of a Deity's lifespan. Since their abandonment, these shrines have become home to dangerous creatures, havens for the deadliest of plants and animals - untouched by dragonkind and fed by a well of old magic.

Perithene's host was once the priestess of one of these shrines, wholly dedicated to a god the name of which has been lost to time. All her life she never left its vaulted walls; here she was hatched, and it was here on the dusty floor that she fell, succumbing to a deadly fungal infection.

The Infection
Sprung from old magic, the spores that fill the air of Perithene's ancient temple took root deep beneath the priestess' scales, transforming her once it had choked the life from her youthful body. Though her scales still gleam with life, they are dusted in a veneer of pale spores, and her body creaks as it moves - mycelial threads binding decayed muscle into a cruel imitation of life.

Current Events
The sentient infection - having donned the skin and identity of a priestess a thousand years dead, still lurks in the temple. It feeds off of travelers, treasure hunters, and anyone foolish enough to stray off the path or seek shelter in the old shrine's deceptively welcoming shade. Perithene permeates the very walls - toying with its prey until its main body strikes.

Place of ResidenceㅤㅤㅤTemple of the Serpent's Maw
Sometimes known as the Serpent's Shrine, the ancient ruins of the Temple of the Serpent's Maw remain Perithene's once and forever home. Her weakness to sunlight keeps her trapped within its walls, but she seems unbothered by her crumbling prison.

Place of ResidenceㅤㅤㅤThe Shrieking Wilds
The dense, choked rainforest at the foot of the Behemoth is known as the Shrieking Wilds; it is an unforgiving biome, one easy to get lost in even on clearly marked trails -- it is never silent, and there is always something watching. The Temple of the Serpent's Maw lies hidden in its depths.

A Word of Warning
From the moment travelers realize they have stepped foot into her shrine they have been breathing infected air; few have been able to escape her and seek treatment before her vicious infection takes hold. Those that do have marked maps with warning signs, and spread rumor that her weakness is sunlight.

PRIESTESS PERITHENEㅤㅤㅤHost (Deceased)
There was no ill will, in the way that the infection targeted the priestess Perithene; in fact, there was no thought process to it at all. At the time, the infection was little more than potent spores, seeking a foothold in the temple. It was only fate that would dictate Priestess Perithene's demise, and her potent magic allowed the infection itself to enlighten into a sentient state.

Magical PreferenceㅤㅤㅤNature
Though some would attest that the deadly spores that infected the once-living priestess are the work of Plague magic, they are intrinsically tied to an ancient well of Nature magic that lies deep beneath the temple's coliseum-esque inner structure.

AlignmentㅤㅤㅤChaotic Evil

Worshipped DeityㅤㅤㅤUnknown Serpentine Deity

Killing SporesㅤㅤㅤPassive
Perithene's presence permeates the temple, her deadly infection spreading to her unsuspecting prey from the moment they arrive in her presence.

Mind GamesㅤㅤㅤActive
The same choking spores that Perithene uses to hunt and expand her presence induce hallucinations; she toys with her prey in this way, showing them terrible visions of beasts not there to chase them through the labyrinthian temple, or beckoning them into her central chamber with the false presence of a loved one.

HealingㅤㅤㅤPassive
Perithene's body can recover from most wounds, even those that to a living dragon would be fatal. Given enough time - and provided no sunlight stands in the way - the mycelial body can pull itself back together.

MYCELIAL THREADSㅤㅤㅤThe Musculature of the Physical Body
Beneath the skin of the long-dead Imperial priestess, the fungal infection has taken hold and devoured what remained of her organic muscle. In order to continue the hunt, the mycelial body has replaced it with its own imitation. These mycelial threads are easy to cut through, if one can get through the hardened and black scales of Priestess Perithene's outer body; they heal, however, unless damaged by sunlight.
Blooming Vine
REMEMBERED REMAINSㅤㅤㅤEvidence of Travelers Past
None who enter the old shrine come out unscathed; with the exception of a few escapees - none of which have survived - most fall prey to Perithene directly. Their bodies are preyed upon by the fungus itself, leaving behind only bones. Even in death, the priestess values a clean temple - these bones are strewn across the forest floor by her attending kelpie.
Cracked Blackened Ribcage
"VALUABLE RELICS"ㅤㅤㅤBait for Unsuspecting Prey
Some might wonder, with so many casualties at Perithene's hand, why traveling to her temple is worth it at all. While she does not hoard reasure, Perithene has learned that treasure hunters are quite gullible, and willing to test their mettle and brave her halls for the treasure they perceive is within. Her hallucinogenic presence fools them - there is nothing within the temple of worth, and the treasure they claim to have found is little more than broken rubble.
Moss-Covered Rubble

21130.png ENETHIREPㅤㅤㅤKelpie
An extension of Perithene's consciousness, the kelpie wanders the temple to hunt where the dragon's body cannot go. Legend has it that if one sees the kelpie, it is already too late.

ObservationㅤㅤㅤPassive
There is nothing that happens in the temple without the kelpie noticing.

Spreading SporesㅤㅤㅤPassive
Everywhere the kelpie walks, Perithene's spores begin to spread.

HuntingㅤㅤㅤActive
When the host body grows weak, its kelpie extension takes up the task of active hunting, able to travel where the host cannot.
