”...Hiding a knife behind a smile, to leave behind an empty city. All things should be contributing to victory. Does it matter? I care not for that.”
She was supremely talented since her youth. There were few opponents who could dare proclaim that they had defeated her in a game of chess. Yet, her fascination with the history of warfare led her former clan to weaponize her mind. And when she led even the smallest of battalions, she would return victorious and proud, to bask in sung praise and lavish rewards. But in actuality, war is nothing but hell. The tragedy began when her pale eyes first laid sight on a desolate battleground, still stained a gruesome crimson. Her ice affinity crept on her own heart, slowly freezing it in order to protect her mind. And yet, this only made her more skilled, and more valued as a tool of conflict. The tactician grew more and more ruthless, as her emotions slowly withered away. Her reflection soon became that of one who only had one purpose, and was to be used for such, until the very end. The strategist continues to bring glory, at the cost of her own soul. She no longer had a vision for her own future, or even her own identity. It had all been subsumed and lost, and she could no longer see herself as anything but a tool; as even her very morality had crumbled away. She could only ever dedicate herself to her craft, the art of strategy, which is ultimately the art of bringing death. Despite its terribleness, all she could do was keep on going- Until she could hardly be considered a dragon, in the eyes of others, who could only see a ruthless commander. She did not care, for such a view was exactly what she deserved, as it was all she was. Even as her health failed, she still worked relentlessly, exhausting her energy on military matters both large and small. The nobility and royalty who ordered her did not ever care. If a tool was fully spent, it ought to be thrown away. When she finally saw her first defeat, she felt immeasurable relief. Perhaps, she could finally rest, and lament all that had been lost. But she awoke to the light of the sun, which called for her to face it. Someone now treasured her for what she was, and not for the sake of using her. They also did not despise or scorn what she was not. Tears froze before they left her eyes, and she collapsed soundly amidst a bed of white roses. To this day, she sleeps. Until the wounds, both seen and unseen, finally heal. |
