Clan Hunter & Seeker

Vengeful, quick-witted, cunning, snarky, playful.

The emergence of the Gaolers from the barren wastes of the Southern Icefield was a shock to most dragons among Sornieth. As the large beasts trekked from their original lands, the mass disturbance of the ice gave way to many secrets. In one such minor fissure formed by the chaos, an egg rolled upon the glaciers and lay dormant and still. Seemingly abandoned and frozen by neglect, the egg was found by a wandering clan of Centaurs. This particular herd of Dunhoofs was thankfully one of the few that maintained an alliance with the dragons, though their symbiotic relationship was lacking in comparison due to the nomadic nature of the group.

Through their curiosity and respect of the dragons, they snatched the egg and utilized rituals in the hopes that the creature inside was still viable. Their efforts paid off in short order, as Artemis pipped from the egg and blinked up at them. The Dunhoofs theorized that her glowing eyes upon birth were the result of their rituals, but it was a mystery as great as what kind of creature this new dragon was.

Artemis grew surrounded by love and respect, never knowing her true family and never caring. It was obvious from a young age to her that she was not of the same blood as her herd, but they treated her as if she were one of their own foals. As she grew, she learned the art of hunting and creating simple weaponry such as arrows and spears. Content in the ice of her homeland, surrounded by the unusual species that called her their child, Artemis was a playful and happy individual, until the darkness struck.

It started much like all contagions do. A lone wandering Longneck stumbled upon their group, acting unusually hostile. When he raised his weapon to attack and rushed at a young foal, he was dispatched by the lead warrior. Silence befell the herd until they packed up and moved on as they always did, intent to put the disturbing scene behind them. Yet, as the sun rose in the sky, it became apparent to Artemis that something was not right with that Longneck. And now something was not right with her clan. Slowly, each day, more and more began acting unusually. The herd was hesitant to do anything about the Dunhoofs who had suddenly changed behavior, not wanting to harm their family.

One morning, Artemis awoke to quiet. Suddenly alert, she perked up and looked around for her herd, finding the camp still set up with no souls in sight. Noises attracted her to the nearby waterfall, and as she cautiously strode to meet her family she instead was received with a harrowing sight: all of them, sharpening spears and arrows, suddenly silenced and turning to face her, eyes foreign and dark. As one, they rushed her. Startled, she turned to flee but was stabbed through the paw by one of her siblings. The group surrounded her, all emotions absent save for unyielding rage. Terrified and desperate, she fought back the best she could, suffering lacerations and stab wounds.

In the end, all of them were slaughtered. Artemis stood among the bodies, legs shaking and panting, her thick coat the only thing preventing worse injuries and likely death. She screamed in sorrow and fury, recognizing with cold realization that this was the dark disease her family had spoken of once before: the Shade.

Months passed in which she lay among the abandoned camp of her brethren, despondent and slowly healing. Hunting was the only thing that brought her any semblance of joy, lost in the happy memories of her loved ones. Then, fully healed and somber, she stood and stared one last time at her final home. Seething with internal rage, the Gaoler trekked to the one place she had heard held the strongest dragons, able to fight any disease: Plague.

Her entry into Clan Ruin was a quick and sure thing. In her travels, she met Veles, who brought her into Scythe's presence where he greeted her with a sinister grin.

"What can a misfit like you provide us?" He asked, tone sly.

"I will hunt for you, so long as I am free to also hunt down all those afflicted with the Shade." She offered calmly, rage festering beneath her tongue. His grin grew wider, head tilting down in acknowledgement.

"Nothing pleases the Plaguebringer more than the weeding out of the weak. Feed us and rid of those plagued by the ultimate disease. Both will earn your keep here."

Though unfamiliar with Gaoler society due to her unusual childhood, a fellow Gaoler in the clan dubbed her a member of the Seeker Order due to her pursuance of the Shade, so she happily wears the mantle of two titles in the clan. And so, in honor of her family Artemis does all in her power to prevent the further spread of the disease that took them from her, in the hopes that no child will ever have to endure the same sad story.
