The peoples of parched savannahs and cracked plains lived by strict laws passed from parent to child: defend clan, protect water, eliminate conquerors. Unlike peoples to the West, Nym’s children did not parley with emissaries from foreign lands. Elders taught each nest of hatchlings of the First Blood; a vicious massacre perpetrated upon one of the first clans of Nym, who had broken bread and bartered for peace with strangers from across the sea. Our goddess had warned them, croaked the grandfather. But they told her they would not strike against those who had not yet offered them insult. Their young paid for their naïveté in blood. He murmured, eyes tired. When the crusaders returned tenfold in search of the bounty shared with them in grace. And there I go jumping before the gunshot has gone off Slap me with a splintered ruler And it would knock me to the floor if I wasn't there already If only I could hunt the hunter Nym had mourned the loss of her children, and her tears summoned a flood unlike that ever seen before or since. The foreign clan, ships full of their stolen wealth, drowned in the ensuing typhoon, ships sunk by their own rotted greed. Still, the rains continued, the Goddess’ grief beyond measure, unsatisfied by her quick vengeance. Here, hatchlings would often gasp, terrified for the surviving children of Nym. Elder, if Nym’s fury was not satisfied by the deaths of the invaders, how did the storms end? What made her tears dry? All gods, regardless of their affection for their flock, could not be swayed by pleas and prayer alone. This the children knew, from other bedtime parables. There is only one way to compel a god, little ones: By offering an oath of equal magnitude, and never, ever recanting it. And all I really want is some patience A way to calm the angry voice And all I really want is deliverance The last survivor of the First-Blooded children of Nym made a desperate bargain with their goddess on the fourteenth night of rain. Nym, goddess of the plains, of the fields, of the open expanse between two seas. Your children have felt your sorrow, have seen your rage, your revenge. I beg of you, give us another chance to heed your warnings and follow your creed. No outsider will again leave your lands unscathed: they will join Nym’s children, and protect your clan and earth with their steel, or they will fall under the teeth and claws of our people, and their blood will flow like water. I like to reel it in and then spit it out I'm frustrated by your apathy A bargain was struck, sealed with salt and iron, and the next morning Nym’s tears dried, fury abated. The oathmaker traveled Nym’s land, sharing the tale of First Blood from sea to sea. Nym’s clans, from the tallest plateaus to the most remote of oasis, swore to uphold Her law. Since that final night of torrential rain, every enterprising party of crusaders, adventurers, pathfinders or colonists whom find themselves about to make landing on Nym’s shore are offered a choice before their feet touch the sand: Return to your home, empty handed and fairly warned of Nym’s law, or spill your blood on our sand and swear to be buried amongst her children, on her sacred earth. And I am frightened by the corrupted ways of this land If only I could meet the maker Few foreigners joined Nym’s clans in earnest over the years, but hundreds of foreign armies were buried in her fields, conquered by Nym’s warrior-clans that patrolled the coastline. Stories spread of vicious barbarians who spilled the blood of any who landed on their shores, and soon every neighboring land established laws forbidding passage to Nym’s continent, fearing the loss of their citizens. Nym’s children, when they parleyed upon open sea, were all to happy to allow foreign lands to spread tales of their bloodthirsty goddess: in truth, they found no joy in the loss of life on their shores, but knew they could not break their oath to the Goddess, nor risk another massacre of Nym’s children. Warmongers, they called them. And yet Nym’s children never once sought war on foreign land: they merely protected the peace of Nym from the violence of conquerors, and welcomed the vengeance of their goddess with blood-soaked smiles. In order for non-violence to work, your opponent must have a conscience. Greed has none. And all I really want is some peace A place to find a common ground And all I really want is a wavelength And all I really want is some comfort A way to get my hands untied And all I really want is some justice
