The start of my 100 Hatchling Challenge
Due to an incident while she was hatching, Almandine can't fly. Her nest-brother Cornelian blames himself, but she never has.
She claims her goal in life is to find true love (and meet as many cute guys as possible along the way). The truth is she is worried about Cornelian and all of her apparently reckless actions are to give him a purpose in life: protecting her.
He grew up withdrawn from the world and plagued with guilt for accidentally injuring her. It didn't matter if she or their parents told him it wasn't his fault. He lived in the little cave they hatched in and never left it except to occasionally eat something. Sometimes she'd look up and catch him staring at her, but he'd disappear deeper into the cave immediately after.
One day she was being harassed by a male she had no interest in. Due to her inability to fly, he was offering to carry her to look at some amazing view. She wasn't interested. After telling him no for the fifth time, the male grabbed her forearm. Something immediately rammed into the male, sending him flying. Cornelian stood before her. The sight of his emaciated form caused her to tear up. "Are....you...okay?" He gasped. His face looked angry and had more emotion than she'd ever seen. After she nodded, he slowly flew back up to his cave.
Cornelian returned to his normal routine in the weeks after and Almandine began trying different things to get him to come out again. He only seemed to take action when he perceived a threat to her. She didn't want to constantly created dangerous situations and risk real injuries, so she decided to pursue love in the most reckless way possible.
At least she wanted to be perceived by Cornelian as being reckless. She was upfront with every male that she wasn't actually looking to settle down and just wanted a fling. The majority were on the same page, but some thought they were hot stuff that'd change her mind. When they couldn't accept they weren't, Cornelian would always step in.
Cornelian began taking better care of himself in order to have the strength to tussle with the larger guys after almost losing a scuffle. It wasn't enough though. He was still only following her around and not actually interacting with anyone else. She tried a different approach, yelling that she didn't want him following her anymore. To her surprise, the next day she didn't see him. Instead, she noticed a female gaoler tailing her.
"Were you perhaps hired by my brother?" The gaoler looked surprised, but nodded. After chatting about the circumstances, Candrima introduced herself and agreed to continue working for Cornelian eventhough their contract should have been over when she was discovered.
After that they had no other interactions. Almandine was happy that her brother was engaging with someone else and continued her pursuit of love in order to provide content for Candrima's reports.
