The start of my Hatchling Challenge
He hatched to silence; the murmuring voice that usually cooed when he wiggled about was nowhere to be found. It was almost as if he hadn't hatched. Wherever he was was the same darkness as wherever he had been, except colder.
He struggled free from the bottom half of his rocky shell prison and then ran face-first into something. Feeling around, he realized he was in a secondary sort of shell with another egg, confining him to a small area.
He'd broken through one shell, so there was no reason he couldn't get through this one. He'd free himself and go find that voice.
How long had he been tearing apart this shell? Tired, hungry, and about ready to give up, something appeared that caused him to close his eyes in pain. He squinted, slowly reopening his eyes to peer out. He didn't know what it was, but he had to get to it.
Invigorated, he attacked the opening with all his strength. The wall fell outward and formed a walkway. It was colder, but he was too memorized to notice. There was something besides darkness! He made his way to the well-lit opening and looked out in awe.
He was high up. There were lots of little things swaying below him, but he had no idea what anything was. Where was the voice?
A sound came from behind him, followed by a thud. He turned around in time to see the other egg rolling at him. Without thinking, he dodged aside and it rolled out.
He peered over the edge and saw something the color of his own arm poking through the shattered egg. What had he done? Quickly he scrambled out and tried to make his way to the ledge below.

Cornelian was the first of two eggs to hatch in an empty cave. His parents were trying to negotiate with a nearby clan that was known to be egg snatchers, so they believed hiding the eggs was the best option. Negotiations took longer than expected and the eggs hatched before his parents returned. Cornelian had broken through his eggshell and the protective nest built to keep the eggs from rolling of the cliff edge. Unfortunately the second egg did exactly that and fell onto a ledge below.
Cornelian immediately felt responsible for his actions and tumbled down to the ledge to inspect the broken egg. Falling from such a height injured many bones and mangled his back left leg. He managed to crawl to the egg and see the small damp figure still inside before passing out. Later he is found by a Gaoler and turned into one himself in order to live.
He is overly protective of his sister, Almandine, after their hatchling ordeal. All the random males she invites over for the evening in her endless pursuit of love has him constantly on edge. After a particular verbal incident with his sister when he was told to never follow her again, Cornelian hired Candrima to follow her instead. Candrima is good at her job and Cornelian can rest a bit easier after reading her reports (though he does have a 'technically I'm not following you' speech prepared just incase Almandine finds out).
