The wooden bowl falls from the man’s hands to clatter to the floor, spilling a thick and viscous red mixture across meticulously drawn lines. The ritual circle is ruined, but this is hardly the most pressing problem. The man’s steps falter as he tries to back away, staring into the luminous eyes of beast he’s pulled into his realm.

”This... isn’t right,” he rasps in a weak voice. “This wasn’t supposed to happen... You’re not—“
”A demon?” the draconian creature rumbles in a lilting accent, its deep voice tumbling out past glittering fangs in a viscerally chilling growl. Its cruel chuckle is even worse, rolling like thunder and sapping the last of the human’s strength from his legs. He collapses, one arm partially raised as if it could protect him from anything this ethereal being could do to him.

”Poor little whelp, don’t you see? Your fumbling spell has worked perfectly. I am exactly what you wished to appear.” The creature paces closer to the trembling human, claws dragging intentionally across the floor. What is left of the meticulously drawn lines is ruined, chalk streaked across the floor to mingle with the congealing blood mixture. The blue liquid within its strange, glass-like underbelly sways in hypnotic and gravity defying motions with each step, but its gaze remains perfectly steady. “I am Grimnir; the one who walks among the uncharted stars and the suffocating black, embracing the vast cold nothingness without reserve. I am the one who pierced the heavens with malicious hubris, only to find the throne long empty and the hosts decaying. I am the one who stares outwards from the void, searching for the wanting gaze and lacking hearts of pitiful mortals such as yourself.”

The dragon lowers its head, its lustrous mane splaying loosely over the floor. With its luminous eyes and shimmering aura, it could almost be described as beautiful... But its presence is overwhelmingly negative; like the lingering feeling of a paralysis demon perched upon your ribcage and tracing claws above your heart, or perhaps the sensation of being lost within the jungle, defenseless and alone as a big cat circles in for the kill.

”You have called me here for a reason, no? You have some trifling little goal you wish to achieve, something you believe will make you happy but lies outside of your pitiful grasp. And now you call out to me, an incomprehensible terror of the spectral realm, willing to offer any number of things in exchange for your wish’s fulfillment... You wish to make a deal. Is this correct?”
The man slowly nods, fear turning slowly to fascination with every low word from the summoned creature. If it will speak for so long with him, surely he’s not in any great danger? After all, he summoned this creature here. That must mean something, even if it claims to be so deeply powerful. He opens his mouth to begin explaining his situation— the deal he’s willing to make to achieve his goal— but he doesn’t even manage the first syllable. Grimnir’s jaws close around the man’s neck, and a single sharp snap leaves him instantly lifeless.

”Fool that you are,” Grimnir grumbles to the lifeless body at its feet, tongue swiping over its lips to quickly clean them, “You meddle with things too far beyond your scope of understanding. You summon the horrors of the worlds here, believing yourself worthy of our time and effort, offering piddling trinkets and pale souls in return. We have no desire for such nonsense, nor will we bow to the will of such regrettable creatures. Your desires in life are meaningless, and your efforts to obtain them are repulsive.”
With a prim toss of its head, the dragon slowly turns back towards the place where it had been summoned. It leaves the unnamed man’s body behind without so much of a shred of concern, focusing instead on slipping back into the space between realms.

”Your kind are far too egotistical for being so frail... You call the wolves to your door, and expect them to behave like awestruck lapdogs. Only a human would be daft enough to be surprised when he is then bitten.”
