Urtica was born at a confluence of leylines in the Ashfall Waste that essentially made her a vessel for far, far more magic than a dragon's body was meant to handle. word this better when you're less lazy straka
The first village she came across- a small trading post, really, where blacksmiths hawked their wares- chased her away when they saw the ember-glow in her wide, frightened eyes and witnessed a sword melt into a glowing pool in her palms. It was a painful lesson, but one that Urtica came to understand very quickly: she was dangerous. She was a thing to be feared. And she wasn’t strong enough for this.
But wasn’t she blessed? Had it not been the Flamecaller who had given her this gift, the gift to burn with a single touch, to walk through flames unscathed, to carry in her the fire of a god? They were right to fear her, but were they right to hate her, to hope she would burn herself out like a candle? And so she tried. She fought for the Flamecaller, for glory, for an acceptance she knew would never come. And slowly, it dawned on her that she had been made to do one thing, and one thing alone: destroy.
She ran, then. It scared her, the thought that maybe she could do nothing but kill and burn and watch enemies go up in smoke. But she had nowhere to run; the dragons of the Ashfall Waste were not sympathetic to a deserter. With every passing day, the energy within her seemed to grow stronger, but her physical strength was slowly sapped, as if she was burning from the inside out. She finally found refuge with Jsander- or perhaps more accurately, she collapsed on the blacksmith's doorstep. It was Jsander who introduced her to Nova Carinae, initially out of a desperate hope that the magic-blocking pylons of the Vigilance could help with her condition.
bla bla bla, it worked and they eventually managed to get the magic-suppressing technology down to a size small enough to be portable, Urtica now has a whole bunch of implants and mechanical bits and pieces that allow her to control the magic in her body (she prefers to keep it at near-zero) and regulate and monitor her vital functions which allowed her to return to Sornieth except this time she was working for NC after they promised they wouldn't ask her to use her powers for anything violent, also she and Jsander are wives lets go lesbiansn!!!
