Blood splatters against the thirsty, thirsty earth, painting the dust vivid before it sinks in and fades, fades.

The plains, as always, are so dull, flat, hungry, hungry.

A bite is ripped out of foolish, foolish prey and swallowed with a snarl; dry, dry, boring.

Paws pad, pad away towards the nest of the silly, silly paper-hoarders, leaving foolish prey for hungrier scavengers.

--

Mrak isn’t quite a dragon. He knows that. The sanctum knows that. The difference between them? Mrak doesn’t care; he has a full, full belly, a warm place to sleep and prey to hunt.

Why should Mrak care for whence he came? It was boring and lonely, lonely. Silly paper-hoarders are entertaining and feed him and need to be kept safe, safe; their fangs hidden and their claws dull and Mrak doesn’t understand, but he figures that’s okay, since they don’t understand his gleaming grin and vicious edges either.

They feed him, and Mrak protects them; what else is needed?

Silly, silly paper-hoarders.

(Mrak stalks the night, dust and shadows and cracks in the earth whispering their hunger, hunger, but Mrak is hungrier, and so the silly paper-hoarders get to keep being silly, because he likes them better that way.

No-one can remain silly once the deep, deep dark has taken a bite out of them, even if Mrak tries, tries his best.
