Biography

SCYLLA
|| The Flood ||
Eight of Wands

ejmi0PU.gif

Born from the Abyss, Scylla is an eerie creature; she has inherited her mother's natural affinity for the depths, her eyes and talons aglow with pale blue bioluminescence. Since her birth she has spoken not a word beyond hissing grunts and pulsing thrums; she communicates in flashes of blue across her black hide, a language all her own illustrated in her very scales.

She departed her family young, leaving the trenches of her birth behind. The Abyss still travels with her; she exhales bitter cold in her breath, and her movements are as the undertow, powerful and relentless. She is driven onward by strange visions that haunt her waking moments, and in scintillating, fractured fever dreams. She dreams of a convergence between the light, the storm, and the sea; a slave empire expanding, a mutiny within a pack of scavengers. Pilgrims waylaid by a silver-tongued warlord. A lonely and corrupted dragon long bereft of his clan, unknowingly drawing closer to his last remaining kin. An escaped slave whose yet-unborn children will sear the waves themselves. A child sent ashore to escape the rising tide, only to return.

A lighthouse, standing alone. Unaware of the storm coming down.

Something has called her to the surface, to the sunflecked blue beneath the frothing waves, to the place where the tide drums against a rocky shoreline. A shape in the gloom accompanied her ascent; a serpent many times her length, eyes black as the abyss itself. Its presence departed as she reached the shelf; she does not know when it will return, but she is certain it is still watching, reporting back to the voice which called to her into her dreams, a voice as deep and ancient as the very trenches that birthed her.

For a time she was alone. There were surface dragons at a lighthouse at the mouth of the strait; an Imperial, a Mirror. Others along the ridge, glimpsed rarely in the night. She knows there must be more; she dreamed their shapes.

One night, one of those distant shapes came close enough to touch.

An Imperial. Born of the winds but touched by the sea. His hide as dark as the abyss she called her home. He was unperturbed by her strange language; their bond formed swiftly, consummated with a first litter of hatchlings, all of which they sent back down to the Abyss.

A gift, for the voice that led them here.
