* at least as far as Yoldu knows. Her mother survived was caught in the cave-in that caused the emperor and lost her memory. Her father died, but his soul was corrupted by the shade before it could move onto the afterlife. Unlike Nalar, who was created later, he is not loyal to the shade and seeks ways to weaken the shade by experimenting on himself, since his new body is of the same essence as that of the shade.

- Nikolai the dragon was killed by the emperor
- The Shade, always trying to find a reliable way of corrupting dragons, used Nikolai's soul and part of its own, formless body to form the first shadeling - a being made of the shade that looks and acts like a dragon.
- Nikolai's soul, however, was not happy with it. After a while, he figured out how to take control of his new body, and found a way to remove it from the shade's hive mind, allowing him to run from the shade with no way for it to track him
- because his body is made of the essence of the shade, Nikolai has been experimenting with different toxins and their effects, looking substances that could be used to get rid of the shade, possibly even in corrupted dragons. So far, however, he has not had any success with this
- eventually he found a clan to stay at, though none of the dragons there are aware of any of his many secrets
- Fallen knows what Nikolai is, but due to being a prophecy it does not speak unless prompted, so Nikolai just tries to stay away from it and does his very best to act as normal as dragonly possible
