One day, you will be faced with whatever saw fit to let you exist in this universe, and you will have to justify the space you've filled.

While Embargo commands power with his statute and strength, in Gaoler society the females hold true power. With the rarity of cubs and his risk of death amongst the adults, the females are honoured and revered. It is known that some males are not even allowed to speak to a female, lest they offend her, Such is the case with Elegy. Embargo is her equal, as her bonded life-mate, but he defers to her. When it comes to speaking to other gaolers, she is the final voice. Elegy is younger than Embargo, but rose quickly through her ranks to match his skill. She is a faster fighter than him, and a keen eye at strategy, but he wins in strength and charisma. Elegy is not good at speaking to other dragons.

She was lying at the entrance of the cave. She could hear one of the prisoners behind her. Prisoner 021, a new one. He was still settling into confinement, and as such was still quite vulgar in his antics. She lifted her chin to scratch under it as she listened to his chamber pot echo off the sturdy door of his cell. A note went next to his entry for that day. “Prisoner 021 – unsettled. Chamber pot loose. Locate before entry into cell.” A shadow fell over her work. She stood up, head bowed towards her mate. “Embargo.” He huffed a gentle greeting to her, before stepping around her. She followed his retreating figure into the cave, knowing his intel was not for idle ears. “Elegy.” She shut the door behind herself, as he settled onto a sparse straw mattress. She needed not reply; instead she chose to gnaw on the haunch of meat he had retrieved earlier that day. He could speak while she ate. “Asylum has recruited the Tribe’s scouts. He states they are short-sighted, but narrow vision is better than blindness. They insist no convoy has been seen. How are the prisoners?” She paused to swallow a hunk of flesh. “Prisoner 021 is disruptive. 018 has requested a cell change away. 016 has developed a cough. 020 is thin, but no developments on its conversations with the Shade. Still refusing to speak or eat.” “017?” She flapped a hand at him. “Miserable. Contained.” “How’s her hand?” “No signs of infection. 018 still refuses to give the fingers back.” Embargo rubbed his chin. “Those convoys..” “Are late. I am aware. The topic has grown stale, Embargo. We need to focus on what we have here. Our prisoners are dying, with the minimal work we can provide. Between the two of us, and Asylum at that Tree, we are stretched thin. We need more gaolers between us and the Fortress.” “I have sent word. And received nothing.” “Have we proof our messages are even reaching the Fortress? I have reasons to suspect our messages are being intercepted.” Embargo sat upright. He had been sneaking closer, hoping for some meat, but Elegy guarded it closely. Elegy sighed. “With the local clan learning our language, I have heard some echoes while we sing. They are poor mockeries of our voices, too high pitched for a native speaker. I believe they are similar species to that one that follows you.” “They have a habit of copying voices.” “I have caught a few dragons inspecting our lair. They did not stink of Tribe.” “What came of them?” “I did what was needed. One, the leader, stunk of Shade. He so kindly delivered himself to the prison.” Elegy was still not giving up the haunch. Embargo decided to give up and wait till later. “Prisoner 022?” “As listed.” She was referring to the entries, neatly bound and kept up on the den shelves. A new book was next to the prisoner entries. It smelled new. Embargo reached for it, ignoring the new prisoner entry. Flipping through the pages, only the first one was filled out. “Entry 900-001, Embargo and Elegy, Rains Moon. 3 movements detected.” Elegy was resting smugly on the haunch. A female like her was too dignified to beam, but she was most certainly pleased with herself. Embargo couldn’t help but feel the same. She was his mate, chosen when they were only cubs. Both had equal abilities, and excelled when working together, but both knew there were deeper meanings behind their partnership. The Wardens relied on them to continue the species, a task seemingly harder to accomplish than the complete containment of the Shade. His face fell. There were larger risks with Elegy’s gravidity. Cubs were taken from an early age and raised with others of their age. Parents did not raise their cubs like other dragons; there were no familial ties to be exploited. With no contact with the Wardens, the cubs were in danger before they were even born. To foster cubs so far from the Fortress invited weakness into the ranks. But to travel back to the Fortress before their tasks were complete, to admit they failed, was a deed worthy of execution. Elegy interrupted his morose planning with a headbutt, a rare sign of affection. Rolling on the floor in front of him, her exposed belly distracted him long enough that such dire thoughts were forgotten, even if for a moment. Tomorrow he would return to his task, a silent soldier of the ranks, fighting a difficult war against the world’s end. But tonight, he could enjoy a quiet moment with his mate.
