Biography

"Ahh, that'll do."
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
» about
Gorrik was born.

He only knows this because he’s alive; he can see his paws beneath his head, and if he accidentally smacks his paw into a rock, he can feel the pain triggering his neurons. He doesn’t know who birthed him. He doesn’t know where he came from. The only thing he knows is that he was born under some circumstances, in some place, by some dragons who may or may not love him.

Or, that was the only thing that he knew. Now, he knows much more.

He wakes up from a slumber at two weeks old feeling very, very cold. The source of this sudden temperature drop appears to come from snowflakes, landing in the curves of his wings and floating gently down to land on his nose. He sneezes and the force sends him toppling backwards, allowing more snow to sneak into his feathers.

He doesn’t know much, but he does have an instinctive desire to curl up somewhere warm and clean the flakes of ice off of his paws. Food can come later, and he can simply eat the snow for hydration, but shelter cannot wait.

He starts his career in building as a hatchling, and his first structure is a small, shoddily built cabin that becomes infested with rats within two days. It doesn’t have much insulation, but he wakes up when he sleeps in it, and that was all he needed.

He crushes it within two days.

Sure, it sheltered him, and that was all he technically needed, but it was abhorrent to look at. It was barely fit for a common rat, let alone a dragon like him who could grow to rattle the ground with every step.

He smashes the building, clawing the decayed wood down into a mushy pile on the ground. He buries it, and buries the idea that he should only build what he needs, not what he wants.

Gorrik spends almost two weeks gathering materials, and spends another month propping them into upright positions until he’s finally built something that could hold a hundred of him comfortably, with none of them ever touching. He isn’t done.

Next is a machine he can use to gather water, pulling it from the clouds and stealing it from the ground below him. It takes him several tries, and several days of sickness from tasting brackish water, but he finds a way to filter it until it’s as clean as the rivers he’s too small to swim in, cleaner than the roiling ocean.

He sets traps using woven grass, and he builds machines to weave the grass for him. By the time he’s been doing this for three months, everything is automated; he lives in a house that he’s shaped over and over again with his own paws. He’s proud of what he’s made. He doesn’t need anything besides his own mind.

Gorrik has learned that needing is not the same as wanting, and he’s come to want connection.

This connection comes in the form of a beautifully adorned Coatl, coming up to the forest where nobody else has been in years. He wonders how she found him. He wonders if she’ll stay.

“Did you… make all of this?” Is the first thing that she says to him. She walks over to his contraptions and brushes her paws against them. She’s gentle with them, but when she turns to him, her eyes are steely.

“Yes.” he says. His voice comes out scratchy from months of not using it. He’s not even sure that he can say many words; he remembers grunts of affirmation, but that’s it. The only language he knows is from texts he’s found dropped in the forest, proclaimed worthless by one dragon or another.

“Well, why are you living here when there’s work to be done? You’re wasting your time here. I have plenty of things on my ship that could use some work.”

That wasn’t what he expected her to say. “I…”

For once, he doesn’t know what to do.

“I can provide materials. I can provide you somewhere warmer than this. I can give you all the food that you need. All you need to do is build a few machines. I know you can do it.” He doesn’t know this dragon’s name. He hasn’t known anyone’s name for a very long time. As soon as she tells him her name is “Siren, but it’s Captain Siren to you”, he’s pulled in, seized by his paws and dragged on board a ship. He has nothing left to lose. There’s nothing for him at his home. It’s immaculate, performing perfectly whether he’s there to pull levers or not.

When he sees her ship, some of the structures in ruin, he thinks about something that he hasn’t thought about in what feels like a very long time.

He has some work to do.
