My claws make red stripes upon the cave walls.
The laughing of hatchlings echoes around me,
Like merry bells ringing.
My own joins in,
As ShallowBrook chases me across camp.
She chides me on my solemnity,
You're a leader!
You must be strong!
Okay,
I say,
But in my heart of hearts,
I know,
She will miss my silly side if it's gone.
I nuzzle her gently and she laughs as I dart away.
The alarm sounds.
It screeches in my ears.
I look back,
For ShallowBrook's support.
She,
As always,
Is right there waiting for me.
I take to the head of camp.
Hissing with bared teeth.
What is this disturbance?
Shadows seep into the camp,
Like molasses creeping slowly towards us,
Parading the flags of our doom.
I step beside my clan,
My family.
The battle begins.
Days later.
The sun shines again.
Today,
It was a victory.
Tomorrow,
Who knows?
