Despite being born into a reasonably wealthy and respected family, Alastrene had a rough start to life. In fact, she almost didn't have one at all. She was born a runt, sickly and weak at birth, and didn't even had the strength to break her way out of her egg. Had her father not broken the shell for her, she would not have been born. The healers all said she would not make it. She could scarcely open her eyes, and lift her head. Surely she wouldn't last through the night. But she did last- she lasted the night, the week, months, all the while being told it was not impossible for her little flame to flicker out. She had a lot of fight in her, though, and more love than she could ask for (her tiny self even melted the heart of Malystrius). Even though she does not have the energy and is significantly smaller than other dragons her age, she is now thriving as a splotchy little thing full of love.

Due to her slower growth and pace in life, she did not make many friends in childhood. But she didn't really need to- she became fast friends with Prince Quintrell, who showed her nothing but gentle patience and often slowed his pace to match her own. Even to this day they remain close, despite the Prince often being terribly busy.
