Crow was...found. Explorers from the Grove discovered him as a hatchling, perched on a rocky ridge glazed with frost, holding a little stuffed toy and just watching the landscape. Though they approached from behind, the explorers didn't startle Crow, his pale eyes never leaving the broad landscape. He spoke mostly in chirps, but could understand the dragons perfectly well. They brought him back to the Grove where his fate was discussed- the whole time the hatchling was contentedly silent. They decided with little argument to offer him a home, and so Crow stayed.

His habit of silently watching never went away- leading to the title of the vigilant, and later, an informal position as guard of the Grove. He carries his pinpush doll most places he goes, and watches. He's often found perched above or near the lair, and if a threat comes anywhere near, he screeches an alarm call.
