My dulcissime, oh how you’ve struggled.” She breathed softly into his ear, gently running her golden claws through his white fur. “A warrior, but not by choice. If only I could make you my knight, little mortal. Then maybe…"

Miles woke with a gasp, squirming within his bed of furs as he struggled to right himself, chest heaving and scales slick with sweat. Instinctively, he reached for his sword, but faltered as his bright blue eyes widened in surprise.

Flowers. All over the inn room. Blossoms of every kind were scattered about on the bed, the wooden floorboards, and some even grew along the walls like tendrils of ivy. Their sweet aroma immediately calmed him, his breathing slowly returning to match the even beats of his heart. Falling back into the bed, Miles squeezed his eyes shut and shivered, a low moan escaping past his lips.

How many times had he dreamed that dream again? He could never see her face, or much of her really, but he could always smell her scent. It was intoxicating and it was fading fast. He wanted to reach out, grasp the powerful scent of pine and lilacs close to his chest and wallow in the comfort of it.

Reluctantly, the Spiral rose from his bed and dressed for the day.

Goddess.

The thought struck him hard, both his mind and heart. “What?” Miles snapped, pulling black his blade just a little. The cowering Fae before him trembled violently, the silks she wore rippling mesmerizingly from the movement.

Goddess… the goddess has… has grown fond of you.” The little dragon whined, raising her paws up and shrinking away from the Spiral with the white wolf’s face. “Please don’t hurt me.” She whimpered.

Goddess?

Miles drew back, puzzled. “What do you mean?

But the Fae didn’t have enough time to answer, for an arrow whistled by the Spiral’s ear and pinned the small dragoness against the study’s wooden wall. Miles whirled around with a snarl, glaring at the smug Wildclaw that stood before him, crossbow gripped in a paw. “Don’t slack, merc. Or the boss will have your head.

Reluctantly, Miles followed his unwelcome company out of the room. But just before he crossed the threshold, he looked back at the Fae, startled to see that her pooling blood resembled the vague shape of a flower.

Something had gone wrong. Terribly wrong, and now Miles was paying the price for a job gone sour. The warrior groaned, clutching his bleeding abdomen as he slithered into the forest, his strength fading by the minute. Angry cries of alarm and battle echoed behind him, but Miles could have cared less at that point. His vision was already beginning to spin and darken.

He did not realize it until the chilly waters of the river kissed his cheek that he had fallen onto a river bank. The water gurgled softly, comforting, and Miles eagerly let his eyes slide close, exhausted.

No, my carissime, it is not your time yet. I will not let Lucifer take ahold of your soul.

Miles was vaguely aware of someone gently pressing into his wound, and suddenly, searing white pain flooded his body and vision, causing him to scream and writhe.

Hush now. You will live. I will make sure of it.

Miles fell limp when the pain retreated, aware that someone cradled him close and tight, their warmth spreading into his shivering body. He could hear the river, but he could not feel it, and Miles relaxed into the promise of embrace. His eyes fluttered closed and he let himself fade into the familiar scent of lilacs and pine.

@Macchi - i took a darker route with your boy. don't know who he's a warrior for, so i made him a mercenary who's trapped in the business and cannot escape. however, a certain goddess has taken an interest in him...
