The second oldest of the four Fae sisters, Hardshell has a quick set of claws when it comes to insects and an even quicker tongue when it comes to her sisters. She handles the sale of general insects to clans looking to feed her fellow Faes and takes great pride in her stock, which she claims is often ‘locally sourced’. Who else are you supposed to call about that jumping spider giving you the evil eye(s) or the beetle that’s made its home in your wares?

There were a few simple facts of life for those who grew up around Hardshell. One was that dirt in all forms was a constant feature of the young collector. That’s where the biggest bugs were, after all. Another was that when told to close your eyes and hold out your claws, it was best for the squeamish not to comply. It was her firm belief that turning over rocks and rotting wood to see what came squirming out was some of the best fun a dragon could have. To each their own, of course.

It truly baffled her that she was alone in this belief. It baffled her further that even Spirals, Skydancers, and other Faes would turn their noses up at the task, calling it nothing but a chore. Some even refused to take part in it, relying on others of their clans to return to them with their meals already caught. Surely it was the dirt or the labor that turned them away. They couldn’t possibly be afraid of the very same thing they were about to put in their mouths? It wasn’t the worst irony on Sornieth, what with Ridgebacks being deathly afraid of water and eating nothing but seafood, but it was still a shock when dragons began to ask for her help with the task. What was even more shocking was that they would pay her to do it.

They often say that if you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life, and who better to help Hardshell monetize her childhood hobby than three other Faes who had followed much the same path as her. Although she was last to arrive to the quartet, she fit right in; as soon as her stall was set up, the pseudo sibling rivalry was fierce and immediate.

While the others had to rely on the intricacy or pure difficulty of their work to validate their stock of choice, Hardshell had quite the trump card and she wielded it without hesitation. Gathering fish, flowers, or fowl might be significantly more difficult than flipping over rocks, but at the end of the day, her sisters ate insects and only insects, and that was that. That might have been the end of any normal dispute, however this several year long feud couldn’t be ended so easily, and it wouldn’t be long until the others start up again with their increasingly ridiculous counterclaims.

Though the constant bickering seems pointless to the outside observer, it serves as encoded encouragement to those who participate. Pride in the work is a necessity to keep up with the other three, a pride that Hardshell has never been encouraged to feel until she was challenged by her new sisters. Now she is the one who deals out the smart comments and snide remarks to both the other three and any insect eater unfortunate enough to be sent to her stall. The latter of which always seem to leave with a few treasure less than they came and a wounded pride. After all, how difficult is it to flip over a few rocks now and then? It isn’t like dragons go and make a career out of it or anything.
