Her father didn’t want her going there. He told her over and over that it was dangerous. She’d end up in thrall to that monster. Pippa rolled her eyes and crunched an autumn leaf underfoot. What was so bad about Beacon anyway? The way her father described her made her seem like some sort of Maren siren caller, or a deadly fairy queen of old. Sure, she sensed that soothing, soporifically calm wavelength like everyone in her family, but she didn’t understand how it could possibly be dangerous. It felt like the mental version of swallowing a cough drop.

She didn’t realize how easy it would be to kill him.
