Suzhen wasn’t paying attention to where he was going. In his defense, he couldn’t actually see where he walked, but seeing as he normally walked through the castle without running into anybody, that wasn’t much of an excuse. He could feel his snake tugging on his neck, trying to get his attention, but paid him no mind. He was late for a very important meeting, and– Wham! “Watch where you’re going,” came the voice of his brother, Gaki. He sounded distracted. “Oh, sorry Gaki!” Suzhen said. “I didn’t notice you standing there!” No answer came but the sound of footsteps. Suzhen frowned. His brother was a bit of a grump, yes, but he normally wasn’t quite this irritable. Another tug on his neck had his head shooting up. “Shoot!” he said. “The meeting!” With that he raced off once more. |

“But Gaki, why would you do that?” Suzhen just didn’t understand. Gaki… his brother… had attempted a coup! He’d failed, sure, but still. He didn’t understand. “Gaki?” “What?” Gaki snapped. Suzhen could hear him walking around, the click-clack of claws on the stone prison floor. “You know what! You tried to overthrow father! I can’t believe you would do something like–“ “Oh, you can’t can you?” Gaki hissed, coming to a stop directly in front of Suzhen. “Tell me, brother, what’s it like being the favored child? The one who always gets what he wants, including the throne?” “I don’t–“ “Oh don’t even start! You’ve been the crown prince since you were born, while I just get the leftovers!” Suzhen couldn’t think of anything to say to that. It was true, he was the heir to his kingdom, but… Did Gaki really hate him that much? Gaki laughed, a low, bitter thing. “I would never have gotten the throne if I hadn’t at least tried,” he continued. “Not that that got me anywhere.” “Gaki…” “Leave.” His tone was clipped. “I wish to see you no longer.” Suzhen opened his mouth, but no sound came out. With a heavy sigh he turned around and left his only brother to his fate. |
