VII
↠ The seventh spirit of the forest

"When I wake up, I'm afraid Somebody else might take my place."

Dark claws scrambled against dark bark, etching scars deep into the rotting wood. His muffled screams for help were unheard by anyone. How had it come to this? Seven’s basket of mushrooms toppled to the ground, but soon the branches of the tree began to stretch out, dragging him away. He was dizzy from asphyxiation, weak and barely able to fight back the tree that was trying to kill him. Spots of white began to cloud his vision, and he could barely move in his futile struggle.

Then it was complete unconsciousness. But death did not await him.

“You are ours, Seven.”

Seven cracked open his eyes, peeking around. The earth was soft below him, a carpet of dead leaves and fluffy ferns and moss. There was certain dampness that hung in the air and clung to him like wet paper, but the air was clean with the refreshing scent of petrichor wafting around.

He inhaled the fresh air, and simultaneously a gust of wind kicked up. Upon raising an arm to hit himself to make sure he wasn’t dreaming (or in heaven, for that matter), a tree next ot him began to bend, mimicking his actions. It appeared that whatever he did was translated into movements of the forest, which greatly stupefied him. Seven had no remembrance of the events before, only puzzled about why he awoke in the forest. Odd. I better head back home. Spinning around on one foot, he came to face a small, olive-green Fae. She was crouching, plucking at the ground. A toppled basket of mushrooms sat beside her, its contents littering the forest floor. Seven frowned at the mess, then reached out to right the basket. He wrapped claws around its roughened handle, but instead of his paw, a fern began to twine around the woven container, startling the Fae as she stared at it in disbelief.

Again? Why can’t I see my body?

The petite Fae jumped, her Lightning-touched eyes darting about in uncertainty. Despite him standing right in front of her, she gazed through him, oblivious of his presence. “Can you see me?” Seven expected to hear his voice, but a howling wind materialized, replacing his voice in drawls and shrieks. Seven shuddered, and the dragon yelped, grabbing her now-upright basket in a fearful frenzy. “Get away from me!” taking off in a panic. Never talking again.

Seven sighed a gust of wind, pushing through reeds and into a riverside. Instead of his reflection, he saw nothing. He stood there for ages, thinking. He was a dragon, but it seemed like he was now one with nature. Then a flash of memories clouded him. Fighting against branches, strangled to death. He was reborn to control and protect the forest. But why him?

“You’re one of us now, Seven. The seventh forest spirit. Even if you wanted to, you can’t leave this place.”

He spotted the Fae returning, trudging aimlessly as if looking for an exit. Slowly, Seven swiped his arm in the air, parting the trees. They peeled away to reveal a clearing. The dragon looked around in confusion, before bolting out of the forest, a smile of relief creeping up on her face.

A forest spirit, huh? Seven smiled, excited to test the boundaries of his new identity.
