Kaisus was a prodigy. That was what his teachers had said the first time they had seen him pick up a sword, barely more than a boy, and that was what they had repeated in the years that followed. They encouraged him into the fighting rings, into the gladiatorial tournaments, onto the fields of war, and even though Kaisus never quite believed them, he obeyed nonetheless. In the few quiet hours he kept to himself, he could not help but wonder how cruel the gods must be for a life soaked in bloodshed to be considered a blessing.

Kaisus cannot count the number of opponents he has felt his sword slice through. There are too many faces to remember, and there is an endless parade of screaming, bleeding, dying dragons marching through his nightmares. Though his years of battle are behind him, Kaisus still does not sleep well.

What absolution can there be for one whose hands are so irrevocably stained with violence? What rest can there be for a soul when the lives it has claimed continuously clamor for their revenge? What forgiveness would ever be offered to Kaisus, and who would offer it to him? He does not know. He dares not ask. He takes his vigil on the walls of Sen I, looking out over the placid forests that surround the city, and prays that the time will never come for him to take up his sword once more.
