Biography

yPL7vcO.gif Detritus

To most, the sight of the half spiral, half beastclan dragon has garnered several feelings of confusion, shock, disgust, fear, and more. Since they were a small whelp of a hatchling, Detritus has grown to expect this reaction from any that catch on that something isn’t quite right about them. It has made them reclusive and fearful of staying too long in one place, or to go out without shrouding their body as best they can from prying eyes. Though, it has done nothing to stop their sense of curiosity that has fuelled most of their experiences in life. If they had been any other dragon, perhaps they would have just lived in some hidden away corner of the wilderness that seemingly reared them until the end of their days. But that was not in the cards for Detritus. They grew accustomed to avoiding the large cities, but their intense desire to travel and see the way the rest of the world was had always tugged them in any which way, eyes wide with awe while they skirted about large groupings of other dragons.

Detritus could not conjure up any sort of memory of their parents. Upon their hatching, they had been discarded among the brush and leaves so young that the first memory they have is of the hazy darkness that clung to the ancient ruins of the Hewn City. The sight of the half beastclan dragon was enough to cause any other dragon to shun them, certain their closeness to shade-touched land was the cause of such an abomination. The beastclan saw Detritus as weak, sharing too close of a bloodline with the dragonkind that Detritus could find no sanctuary among either. Doomed to starve or be ravaged by the elements, Detritus stuck to the fringes of villages among their treelines in the underbrush.

The beetleboar that came across the hatchling had been scavenging for grubs, his verdant and mossy back blending into the environment just as much as Detritus did. Coming across them was a shock at first for the familiar, but it seemed Detritus had lucked out when found by this particular beetleboar. They were not normally the kind of beast that was necessarily familiar with other non boars, especially dragons. The same could be said for this one, as he had seemingly huffed and turned around. Only, Detritus followed. For quite a while, the hatchling slinked behind the beetleboar, shrinking behind a tree or a shrub when the familiar turned back to look at him as if he would not spot them.

“Alright,” the beetleboar huffed. “Come on out now.” He watched as strange golden eyes peeked around the corner of the tree they currently were hiding behind. A slow blink, and the dragon moved out from their hiding place and made slowly towards the boar. He’d turn to face the hatchling fully, a stern look on his face as he regarded his shadow.

“And what,” he began. “Do you think you’re doing?” the dragon blinked at him for a moment again, those wide and unusual eyes regarding the familiar that spoke to him.

“I…” their voice was small, soft and clearly under used. “I don’t know…” the beetleboar cocked his head, then let out a huff. Steam puffed from his nostrils, but the boar looked away.

“Listen, young whelp. It’s most unwise to go following strange beasts about in the woods. That’s how you become someone’s dinner,” he explained. “Now, you’re lucky I’m in no mood for… well whatever it is you are. Now go on, back to where you came.” with that, the beetleboar turned and went back to foraging for something to eat. He still felt eyes on him, but decided not to pay them no mind thinking that attention would only fuel his unexpected companion on. When he turned his gaze to him eventually however, he was surprised to see the hatchling watching carefully what he’d done to find food and begun to imitate him. The beetleboar paused, coming into the realization this strange little dragonling had no idea how to take care of themselves.

In any other circumstance, one would expect to just let nature take the reigns. However, the beetleboar could not take such a mindset himself knowing that Detritus had clearly been abandoned without even an ounce of understanding how to fend for themselves. Doomed to die, willed so by their parents or whomever it was that had dropped them there knowing full well they had condemned the hatchling to death or worse. Something softened in the beetleboar - not that he wasn’t a kind soul to begin with of course - and he could no longer just walk away from the situation.

Originally planning on just helping Detritus till the beetleboar deemed them self-sufficient, it turned into something far longer. Detritus found themselves a friend, a parental figure and a companion as they grew into an adult. The two became inseparable, traveling much farther than the brambles and brush that had been their original home. Detritus however learned that just because they had a familiar in tow did not quite mean they were a dragon deemed normal by any standards.

“Another town,” the beetleboar grumbled, sitting down on his rump with a pointed huff. “These dragons are terribly judgemental.” Detritus shrugged, curling their long body into a pile next to him.

“It’s okay, I guess,” they sighed themselves. “I understand I’m not normal looking.” their companion grumbled out something, but silence fell over them for a moment.

“A disguise. Yes, that’s what you need.”

“Huh?” with no further explanation given, the beetleboar jumped to his hooves and took off. He only returned an hour later when he had what he was looking for, and draped the rags across Detritus’ body to conceal the clear distinguishing marks of a half-dragon brood.

The disguise was well enough that the two were able to pass through the outskirts of any settled place far easier than they had in the past. Detritus had always found themselves in utter wonderment of the world and the beings that inhabited it, but the trauma of never being accepted had been enough to deter them from staying too long. The fear of eventually being found out or being rejected further was enough to keep them shy, but their odd, wide eyes drank every ounce of it up. They learned how to speak well enough the language of both the dragons and beastclan, hearing and telling stories of their travels to all that listened long enough before they worried it was time to leave. Detritus had always been a touch shy, but it was only exacerbated by the fear of those unknown dragons and beasts. The two had been lucky only once before their new disguise had they felt fear for their lives, and had made post haste across the land to put distance between them. They learned quickly which places were safe, and which were not.

One clan specifically though had become an unofficial base camp for the two, as Detritus and their companion beetleboar would often make trips to it. There they’d share their stories and hear the ones of the others, snacking on food gathered and telling of their travels as one by one everyone listened. Then in the morning, or a day later Detritus and their familiar would be off, traveling once more.

Detritus rolled: a CRITICAL HIT!
You chose: 3 random headcanons

1. Detritus adores learning new languages. Sure, that’s something that’s helpful for any vagabond traveler, but he loves listening to the cadences of different languages and learning how they fit under his tongue. He tends to be a quick study - sometimes out of necessity - but he and his beatleboar companion often swap languages as they walk, trying to keep everything fresh in their minds.

2. Detritus’s second love? Board games. (His familiar is half convinced there’s a pun there between boar and board, but Detritus denies this.) He’s not good at card games or games of chance - he’s got a poker face that’s far too easily read - but he loves longer board games, partly for the craftsmanship he’s seen over the years, and partly because there’s no better way than to get someone to talk to you than inviting them to a game by the fire.

3. Although he doesn’t carry much with him as he travels, one of Detritus’s favorite objects is a set of panpipes given to him by a satyr living on the fringes of the Shifting Expanse. They stayed with this satyr for a couple of months when the beatleboar was recovering from a broken limb, and the satyr - a solitary sort of fellow - took rare enjoyment in playing for Detritus. He can’t play them very well - not yet at least - but the moody, melancholic songs remind him that although the world can be cruel, there’s no telling who you’ll meet around the corner.
