_____He was alone, and that had proven to be the biggest problem.
_____Scratch that: What hit him was the biggest problem. The dragon— what even was it, a plus size tundra in full winter coat??— was more than twice his size. Sure, he was still growing, but it was a big not-tundra. The only warning he got was "Got it!" and then he was on the ground, held down by scary long claws on extra large feet.
_____The rest of the group joined his attacker, more not-tundras, and unbelievably in the humidity of Nature, some sported even more fur than the first. They were all ice dragons, and he growled at them, taking a snap at the one that held him and earning himself one of those long dagger claws at his throat.
_____"I like it. It's got spirit." Commented a periwinkle colored one with an emerald collar of extra fur. "Whose got the scroll thingy? I wanna see how this works!"
_____A grey not-tundra with brambles tangled deeply in the fluff on its legs produced a scroll, and he struggled harder. There was dire magic, all rolled up in an innocuous package and tied with string. They intended to change him into something else, and he wanted no part of that. He's not ashamed to admit he whimpered at the scroll passed close to him, though the group only chucked at his distress.
_____"You've no need to be concerned! We're just recruiting, and you've been picked. Haven't gotten to change a two-legger yet, we think you'll be a great addition to the order . . . you don't understand anything I'm saying." The grey dragon sighed and cleared its throat. "Is this the right dialect? Do you understand me now?"
_____"Release me, trespassers!" He snarled, impotent on the ground as the dragon holding him was away from his enlarged slashing toes.
_____The grey cleared its throat again and announced. "I, Mercor, do hereby appoint you . . . we'll get you a new name befitting your new title . . . to the position of Gaoler Seeker. You will find Shade in this verdant excess, and you will report in to your captain. A team will move in to contain the horror. At this time you are only a scout, not appointed the full honor of Seekers, but as you do your duty and do it will, your responsibilities will grow. Do you agree?"
_____"My clan will not stand for this injustice! This attack is unprovo—"
_____"—Splendid." The grey undid the string, releasing the magic of the scroll. "That's what they all say at the beginning. You'll grow to meet the task."
_____The scroll was chucked in his direction as the circled sprang backwards away from the changing magic and its influence. He didn't even have time to thrash before the parchment struck him immobile, stealing the breath from his lungs so he couldn't even scream.
_____They paced while he changed, watching his progress as limbs lengthened, feathers softened into hair, scales sloughed off and exposed tender skin which was prickled through with fur. They oohed and ahed at his awkward antlers, and he thumped his fur heavy tail with his ire, able to move little else as joints resettled for his new form.
_____Before the job was finished they left, dropping a gleaming messenger case by his nose. Enhanced as he was now, scents came impossibly strong, the Labyrinth flowers and rot so strong they made his eyes water. Above it all was the smell of frostbite, the metal of the case heavy with the old scent of Ice.
_____He pushed himself over to it, rump high in the air, front limbs too long, and fumbled off the cap. Inside, his new name at the top of the scroll, and below, the name of his new captain, where and when they were appointed to meet, and the territory he was supposed to check for Shade activities.
_____Disgusted, he tossed the container away.
