MAHAZAEL

Prologue
A thousand years and counting he’s finally done it. He’s broken through the veil. Patiently, so very painfully patiently, he’s been pulling back the fibers that separate the shadelands from Sornieth. It was the most boring thing he’s ever done— and he’s done almost everything there’s to do! Breaking them was easy. Not tearing apart the veil in its entirety was the hard part. Whoever made it was an artless craftsman. The lightest touch made the whole thing quiver. If he went too fast it’d start shredding uncontrollably. Threatening to mix the worlds together which would ruin the whole point. It took forever to make the hole wide enough for him to fit through. Idiotic wisps, however, were small enough to fit into the tear he made from the beginning. They’d slip between his legs. Thinking themselves slick.

Once on the other side they took on wondering new shapes. Stupidly aping the first thing they saw without thought if what they were crudely copying was even meant to be alive. Amateurs. He’d snap up the dumber ones that got too close. They’d disappear into one of his many maws with a near silent scream. His habit of eating them never stopped them from coming near. The temptation of a whole new world too much to resist.

The dumbest one of them all he kept close. A wisp who managed to escape his grasp through the veil and yet came back.

It told him stories of the other side. Sornieth is full of life, it whispered, creatures of all sizes made of meat and hope. They celebrate the days you grow so bored you fall asleep letting thousands of wisps pour through.

Apparently the creatures—dragons—call it the Night of the Nocturne and it’s a holiday! That was just interesting enough the next time he felt the urge to fall asleep from the boredom he forced himself to stay awake. Holding still so the wisps thought he was sleeping. Sure enough a mass of them showed up. Rushing through like an unchecked river.

Ah wisps. No substance, no thought.

That chatty wisp came back with even more stories. Dragons eat only four kinds of things and wear colorful fabrics. They wield magic that burns and collect trinkets from the enemies they defeat. It was particularly emphatic about the burning part. Eeling around his feet like it expected something from Mahazael. Idiot. It was lucky he didn’t step on it.

But colorful fabrics and trinkets. He could work with that. Next time he felt sleepy he made a bunch of stuff for the wisps to take with them. Clothes, baubles, and food. Really nothing beyond him. It didn’t take much convincing for the wisps to grab the objects and scurry out like he made the items for them. With little bits of his power on the other side his understanding of it grew and his work pulling apart the veil went quicker than ever. Now that he could finally see the underneath of it.

And hey. It was a holiday, right? His holiday. Only right he be involved. All of those little dragons playing with bits of his power, wearing it, eating it— He smiled with all of his mouths when he felt that.

Dragons aren’t much smarter than wisps, aren't they?

But, truly they do have his gratitude. Without their hard word spreading him far and wide it would have taken him another thousand years to get out.

The day he crossed over all of Sornieth stood still. Certain something was terribly wrong, but not sure what.

It didn’t take him long to find some dragons. A family. He swallowed them all. Despite their fuzz they were surprisingly cold. The biggest ones slung ice at him in wild arcs. Refreshing.

Novel.

Mahazael folded himself up until he looked like one of them. Friendly floof. But he couldn’t get the coldness they emanated right. He had been burning with envy for so long that he was still burning with it. Just a little. But it wouldn’t matter unless one got too close to him and if they were doing that then, well. They weren’t going to be able to tell anyone about it anyways. He covered up any extra eyes or mouths he couldn’t get rid of with clothes. The biggest one being where his belly should be. A wide welcoming pink strip with gallow teeth on the sides. If he got lucky maybe someone would hug him.

That wisp, the dumbest wisp, showed up not long after he changed forms. Singing songs, and fluttering around in biting distance.

“If you are going to keep following me around then you are going to need a name.” He said with his newly formed vocal cords. “It’s a great honor to be named by something like me. So you better listen close when I call you DoNotEat.”

The stupid thing shivered in open delight. Zipping off to crow to the other wisps that it had been named.

Although the name was really for his own benefit. Wisps looked a lot alike when you are as big as Mahazael is.

His gaze turned to Sorneith.

Wherever he went it was sure to be interesting.
