A statue, carved out of the surrounding rock, intended to protect and watch over the dead. Has been adorned with gold by the Necropolis' residents, as offerings both to the statue and its charges.

WIP lore: caretakers (and residents) of a necropolis on the northern border of the wasteland, built(really more like expanded, there are lower layers of far older tombs, but many of those are no longer structurally sound) by communities from plague and earth for the casualties of war while it was still ongoing. they keep it voluntarily, no one was ever assigned to upkeep the place, and not all of the living agree on what their work should consist of/allow, or are even aware of each other's presence.

These caverns reach far, far down.

ankou -hmm,, too loud / squeezy stress toy-> <-play bitey yay / are you angry do you wanna beat me up would you kiss me- sashimi
ankou -chill, helpful, respects her charge / service dog & neurotic big cat-> <-cool mysterious strong provides enrichment (tasks) / I wanna study you like an abandoned building- quinine
sashimi -distracts my playmate >:( / get out of my school-> <-scary. stop that / kinda fun to get to playfight for once- quinine

sash @ both later: hey wait quit pitching yourselves/each other into self-destructive spirals you're making me sad :(

keeping this for future reference

ankou- backstory- raised by mercenaries, and fought in defense of plague territory during the war, trying to defend small settlements that couldn't defend themselves. constantly choosing losing battles gave her a reputation as a bad omen, and that still affects how she sees herself, which makes her more comfortable protecting graves instead of living dragons.
/ current- the necropolis is her charge, she's put herself in control of its care. she recruited sashimi to help her guard it against graverobbers and vandals, in return, sashimi can keep anything that robbers bring in. she recruited quinine to help her rebuild and expand the necropolis.
she doesn't talk much, and speaks in short sentences. has an intimidating presence. very blank most of the time / not in touch with her emotions at all. she gets along well with quinine, who isn't very confrontational and has plenty to fill conversations with alone, and she conflicts with sashimi, who likes to provoke her for fun.

sashimi- oh boy ok. background- (this stuff is still fuzzy- some intentionally some not, so bear with me)(you'll have to take the immortality thing as a given, it's more of a story tool itself than something I'm interested in ever creating an explanation for, yknow?) a long long abyss of time ago, she was a very well-respected knight of a kingdom that is now lost from any historical record. as a child she was taken in by the kingdom to become a soldier, and by the time she was a young adult she had been knighted. she took all of this very seriously, she admired the structure which gave her safety and authority, defending it was her entire life.
at some point the kingdom was overthrown, leaving her untethered from her life.
(insert absurd abyss of time here)
she's not dead. she doesn't seem to be able to die. it's a fact that she prefers to hide, along with any clear details about her past, it's painful to think about. she still thinks of herself as a "class above" most of dragons she meets, as a knight. it's difficult for her to care about anything, as it's all outside of everything that she was taught was important, and she knows she'll live to see it disappear.
/ current- aaand dramatics aside, she channels this nihilistic view into being a childish goofball! if nothing matters or will ever matter, may as well have fun with the eternity you've got.
for a while she's been playing highwayman with a group of small-time crooks she's collected. trying to rob graves put her in ankou's way, and after squabbling over it they made a deal for sashimi to work for ankou instead. she and her band are ankou's eyes, ears, and swords.
she and ankou spar together to stay sharp, and for fun. she likes to tease ankou to try to get new emotional reactions out of her, which ankou thinks is annoying. sashimi gets a kick out of ankou (in her view, a "low-class" soldier) ordering her (a "high-class" knight) around, but she doesn't mention the joke out loud. in her own way, she does like ankou, and respects her.
I'm still kinda working on her dynamic with quinine- at this point sash dislikes her for getting more of ankou's attention.

quinine- (for some reason she's difficult for me to summarize, idk why. anyway) background- she was born in the depths of the water flight (I can never remember canon location names oof) and was trained to be an architect/oversee the construction of the living spaces for their oracles. she loved it, but during her first authorized piece of work she got a little too personally involved (her own latent talent for their flight's foresight messing with her work) and it all went Very Wrong in a way that makes her Entirely Unwilling To Mention It Ever. she was banished from her flight, and now pretends that she is from the shallows of their territory, no dark past here no sir :)
/ current- while stopping at the necropolis during her aimless travels, she mentioned to ankou that she used to be an architect, and ankou roped her into staying to make sure that new additions to her charge would be constructed safely. it's a little stressful, but she's more happy to be working on her passion again, and its not like too many living dragons will be using the rooms anyway.
she's pretty chill, has a cheerful disposition, likes to ramble excitedly about anything remotely related to her work. doesn't like to invite conflict.
she's learned to not be intimidated by ankou, and enjoys her company. she's especially appreciative of ankou placing enough trust in her to let her work on her charge.
she's mostly just a little alarmed by sashimi at this point, but could learn to like bantering with her in time (later, later)

{i may be unable to articulate the q/s dynamic but make no mistake i am obsessively fixated on it}{henchmenships get me every time}

lovely commission written by-
Gubyub/567852 wrote:
A crunch under her cold, powerful claw; pebbles were crushed underneath her palms as she traversed the empty tombs, her daily perimeter check being currently undertaken. The coarse, dusty feeling so common under her talons, she continued her watch for intruders or grave thieves. She let out a soft huff; her breath fused into the blanketing fog across the grounds.
The land she stood on was a grand graveyard, ruined by history and its blood. A great war had ceased what life was left, destroying the structure and adding more to the buried. A desolate space, few truly desire to stay here as their home, all familiar companions to one another, all given the knowledge of the past war found in the remains of the area.
The Guardian who watched over the dead landscape knew the most of the necropolis, calling herself the tender of the fallen when she arrived. Far easier to protect than the living, she resides her as her home as well, preferring the deceased silence. Thick rags and heavy garments outfitting her, she hones her high skills for just-in-case purposes instinctually; History’s mistakes and troubles allow her to keep her strength.
Traveling lonesomely, her head perked up, fins twitching once. She looked around; dust only floated, carrying the pestilence of the neiboring region, though if thick enough, dust could hide someone. The Guardian heftily continued, picking up speed, her eyes darting around everywhere. There were intruders, and she could sense them. She trotted around the stones, carefully peeking over the other side, listening intently for any wrongs in the quiescence.
A zip past her.
The Guardian jerked around; Nothing. What had she heard?
Wind jetting past her again.
“Who’s there?” She bellowed. She gives them a chance to reveal theirselves before her “warning”.
Another speeding zephyr.
“Show yourself.” She focused in on the sound. There was a pattern to them; she needed to find it.
A swift gust once more.
The Guardian grit her teeth, then instantly lifted her tail, clenching it mid-air. A choking noise sounded once it tightened.
“Ack!-”
Checking around herself, she moved her tip to her front, finding out who had been streaming against her. Disgruntled, she saw the sight of a Spiral, grinning widely with her gaze stuck on the Guardian’s. Mascara-lined bright orange eyes, she wore a dune-colored cloak over her warm attire, a mask covering most of her hidden face. Scars over her uncovered parts indicated the encounter might not’ve been her first. The Guardian thought she had better hoped it wouldn’t be her last.
Dominantly, she questioned, “State your purpose here.”
The Spiral chuckled through her cloth. “Sorry lady. Just got lost around these parts. Know the way out?”
She didn’t answer, instead intently scrutinizing her. The Spiral scoffed.
“Do you even talk?-”
“I talk. I want you to talk. You sound like you speak lies.”
“Pfft, well, take it however you want; I was wandering around here when I realised I could remember where I was heading, or where I was. Where am I anyway?”
The Guardian squinted, then turned the Spiral, inspecting anything hidden. A clink sounded; a cleaver was hidden underneath the sandy cloak, decorated with stains the Guardian knew far too well. She turned her back.
“Find anything interesting?”
“You are a thief.” Her steely gaze dug into the Spiral’s cool one.
She gasped obnoxiously. “How dare you assume something of me?! I would never do something like that!” A smiling uncontrollably spanned her face. “That’s rude of you to think that-” The grip suddenly tightened around her neck. “Gah!”
“You’ve made a poor choice deciding to steal from this graveyard, Spiral.”
“Th-The nam-me’s S-Sash-shimi-i,” The Spiral stuttered.
“Did you come here alone, Sashimi?”
Sashimi struggled to nod her head. The Guardian rose her claw to uncover the mask hiding her silly grin. Memories in her mind allowed her to be unphased by the sight; Sashimi had scars lining down her mouth, gracing her face at her cheeks as well. Her smile still beamed brightly on her damaged face.
“This isn’t the first time I’ve come across someone like you,” she easily confessed. “A fight with me will be harder than you think of a mere Spiral.”
“. . .Is that a challenge?”
Sashimi rose a brow. “Do you want a challenge?”
The Guardian was tempted, but shook the thought away. “No. I have a job; you’re just trying to distract me from your little band of thieves.”
“You’re probably right, although, as I said before, I came alone.”
“Words do not always express their true meaning. Anyone can say anything and hope the other will believe them. That’s what you wanted to happen, isn’t it?”
She sighed. “Oh well! You got me I guess. Oh no, you’ve figured out my plan. You feel any better now? You’re so uptight.”
The tail’s grip strengthened. “I have no time to play around with people like you, or even play around to begin with.”
“Why not relax a little?”
“Because unlike you, I have something important to do.”
“Who said I didn’t have anything important to do?”
“Your actions speak much greater than what you’ve already said.”
Sashimi shrugged. “I see them as words. Just ‘cause I act like that means nothing.”
“Then tell me, Sashimi. What importance do you have to do?”
For a moment, just a brief second, the Guardian could’ve sworn they saw Sashimi sober her expression before she smirked again. The Spiral answered, “Stuff. I don’t need to tell you.”
She huffed. “You act like a child.”
“Thank you! I get that a lot.”
She rolled her eyes. “No wonder.”
“Y’know, you haven’t given me your name yet.”
“I never give my title to anyone.”
Sashimi looked her up and down, deadpanned. “. . .what title?”
“My name, Spiral. I don’t give it to anyone.”
“Ohh. . .You didn’t seem like you’re of high status, so I got confused.” Her smirk biggened.
“You say that to get a reaction out of me. You wouldn’t understand.”
“Understand what? You have no allegences, do you?”
She sighed. “I have an allegiance. . .to this graveyard.”
“Doubt that. Who would do that?-”
“I would.” She had said it without a second thought.
“Well, you do you, but tell me. I’m dying to know before I really do. Get it?” She snickered at her morbid joke. The Guardian remained stoic.
“. . .Ankou.” Her tail tightened, and didn’t stop. “My name is Ankou.”
“A-Ankou, you e-ever been c-cut b-by a c-cleaver?”
Confused. “What?”
Sashimi immediately twisted her tail around the giant knife’s hilt, pulling it from her belt and swishing it quickly at the Guardian.
In response, Ankou swiftly jerked back, releasing the Spiral as well. The cunning serpent landed where she had hovered in the bigger drake’s tail, getting a breath in. “I…I assume so, huh. . .?” She rubbed underneath her head; stung like The Infection, but deities was it good to feel pain again.
The focused, agitatedd Guardian stood in a defensive position, keeping a locked gaze on the unpredictable Spiral. “I knew it.”
“You’re smart, Ankou. You could be useful in my band of misfits.” Fast as a jet, she sped towards the Guardian, aiming for an arm. Ankou managed to dodge, but her left fin didn’t go unscathed, cutting a peice of the fan. She ignored the pain, darting towards the tiny dragon for an attack, mostly to end this as quickly as possible. Although pain is normally blunt, the sheer surprise had forced through the thick barrier; she managed to crush the tail, but Sashimi took the close-up as an opportunity to scrape the blade against her forearm, crossing her neck as well. Ankou grunted as she back off the Spiral’s tail, huffing heavily.
Sashimi herself was checking her tail for wounds; her arrow tip was flattened. “Ngh. . .”
“Don’t deal me anything. I don’t speak to bandits like that.” She rushed forward again, Sashimi unfortunately unable to pick it up fast enough. The Spiral’s under-stomach closer to her head was cut deeply by Ankou’s fast claws, bleeding right after the slit. Sashimi started to twitch in her tail, difficulty showing in her expression as she tried to smile.
“But why not? You could be doing so much better things than holding over what life you have left in a place that will take the rest for sure.”
A growl erupted from Ankou’s throat. “This is what I protect. You wouldn’t understand; you have no charge.” She took an imposing step forward; Sashimi flinched.
“Yeah, of course I wouldn’t understand the intricate and complexity of a Guardian and their charge.” The cocky Spiral waved her claws around. She managed to weave around Ankou’s rush attack better this time, unscathed.
“I despise those like you.”
Sashimi shrugged. “Tell me something new. You have no idea what I’ve already heard.” She sighed to be joking in dramacy, but it distracted her from Ankou’s sudden attack; the quick Guardian dashed forward, training towards the unsuspecting Spiral and slitting right under her neck deeply. Sashimi fell to the ground, quite literally twisting in agony. Ankou came over and picked her up from her bleeding neck, deepening her dagger gaze into the grinning Spiral’s.
“How do you smile at such a gruesome fate for you?”
Sashimi chuckled through the pain, coughing up blood at the same time. “Th-thank you. . .”
Perplexed, but still on guard, Ankou asked, “For what?”
“P-pain. . .”
“. . .You wanted pain?”
The Spiral struggled to nod. Blood was starting to pool on the ground, dripping from the Guardian’s strong claw.
“Why would you want that? Did you come here for it?” Her grip slightly loosened so she could speak better.
“Hhh. . .I m-miss this f-feeling s-so much. . . .”
“You confuse me, Spiral. Why would you miss pain?”
Still smiling, she answered, “B-being imm-mortal gets boring. . .’
Ankou softly gasped. “You are immortal?”
She nodded again, coughing. “I m-miss m-my battles. . .m-my fights. . .m-my kingdom. . . .”
“You are royalty.”
“I am a kn-knight. . .”
With difficulty, Sashimi was able to tell her tale of knighthood, of serving a long lost kingdom ages ago, and being burdened with the incredible oddity of immortality, longing for the energy one had in war, missing the pain that bundled with honor. Ankou listened to every gurgled word she could, unconsciously thinking of her own life, her own things to protect, similarly to the Spiral.
To her biggest surprise, Sashimi had ended her tale with, “. . .I apologise. S-saying it aloud. . .made me r-rethink myself. A knight g-gives honor and res-spect. I’ve s-seem to f-forgotten that ov-ver the y-years. . . .”
Ankou sighed, looking her over again with the newly-obtained knowledge. She was a Spiral who snuck into the Guardian’s gravesite, scavenging for treasure, looking through the graves. . .wanting to find anyone who would defend them like Ankou. While she didn’t respect her living, she did understand why she wanted to look around for someone like the Guardian.
She looked past her noodle-like body, spotting the cleaver on the ground near her, speckled with dust, dirt, and blood. Carefully, she led her tail around to the hilt, grabbing it and pulling it behind herself, then looking through Sashimi’s goods, disarming anything else she had with her. When satisfied, she hesitantly released the Spiral; Sashimi sucked in a huge breath of air, then coughed violently for a moment before looking up at the bigger drake.
Ankou reluctantly-she believed-offered, “I want to make a deal.”
Sashimi rose her eyebrows. “What kind of deal?”
“A trade.”
“What do you want from me?”
“I want you to assist me with something, and in return, I give you something back.”
“. . .What do I have to help with?”
“You need to help protect this grave with us. . .” Ankou looked down to see tiny tears beginning to streak the Spiral’s eyes.
“W-What do you give me then?”
“I give you purpose, a reason better than stealing. I give you something to protect.”
Sashimi heaved, sniffling before wiping her eyes and clearing her throat.
Before coughing again.
Afterward, she answered, “Uh, sure, I guess I can do that.” She shrugged, trying to play it cool. Ankou had rose her claw to shake the Spiral’s; Sashimi looked at it for just a moment before grabbing it and shaking, agreeing to the Guardian’s deal.
At the same time, a couple new drakes walked up to them, leading another Guardian with them. A Ridgeback and an Obelisk, the Obelisk explained as they approached the other two, “Hey, Ankou. We spotted a bunch of thieves around here, including this one.” He nodded towards the Guardian; they didn’t look very excited to be there.
He continued, “We were gonna put her with the others, but there wasn’t much space. Chapel wanted you to see her though.”
The Guardian they had brought was colored brown, similar to the grounds below. Rags on her wings, little orbs of light congregated around her head, petals and smoke floating around the rest of her. She wore apparel fit for a librarian, with papers and books decorated with plans overfilling her satchel. Her expression remained worried.
“I don’t mean to cause trouble, honest,” she reasoned. “I was traveling around the realm after leaving my gods-forsaken flight and wanting to find somewhere to reside when I found myself here. I promise I’ll leave.”
Ankou stepped forward; Sashimi slithered forward a little too, looking into her bag for bandages. The Guardian inquired, “Why have you left there?”
Her eyes widened before immediately answering. “I don’t wish to answer. It’s…I just can’t. I promised myself I’d never speak of it again.”
The Obelisk warned, “You’re gonna have to break that promise or so help me-”
Ankou raised a claw; the Obelisk silenced and leaned back. “. . .Can you not tell us anything?”
The other Guardian sighed as the Spiral started walking around her. “It was something. . .structurally related.”
“As in, you built something?”
“. . .m-more or less.”
Sashimi chuckled, a discordant noise from her bleeding neck. “No kidding. Look at these plans in her pouch. Ooo, that looks cool-ah!” She darted away before the Guardian could grab her papers back.
“Return those!”
“Why? They look cool!” She handed it to Ankou, who studied it carefully. The other Guardian became nervous.
Then, she finally spoke. “. . .these blueprints look well sturdy.” Only her eyes moved, looking up to the other drake. “You made these, you say?”
She nervously nodded.
“What is your name?”
“Q-Quinine. I prefer Quin though.”
“Quin. . .I have a proposition for you.”
Quinine’s fins perked up, worried.
“Can you be the architect of this necropolis?”
“. . . .What?”
“The buildings and structures here are in need of repair. Rooms for new recruits need to be made as well. Can you do those things?”
“. . .You want me to be the architect for this graveyard?”
“I cherish it deeply, as it is my charge. Even though it’s a grave, I still find it a sad sight to see all these broken structures.”
“Uhm. . . .”
“I give you a place to stay. You would have no more need to roam anymore. You would have a home, a purpose.”
Sashimi quietly remembered her offer.
Quin thought over the deal. She was tired of traveling everywhere, wanting to rest her weary claws somewhere, and perhaps find a clan willing to take such an ambitious and energetic draftswoman. She was expecting to be the one offering the deal, honestly, along with the timepsan to be longer than this. However, she still had been wandering for years at this timepoint. . .
She sighed. “Er, I suppose I could do that. . .I’m unsure of where I would go if I declined anyway. . .I accept your offer then.”
Ankou perked up; two recruits in one day? That was wonderful! She nodded to Quin’s guards, signaling them to release her. They stepped back as Ankou turned to Sashimi.
“Your allies. They are being held in our strongest prison.”
She shrugged. “I can get them to help too. Gotta lead me where they are first though.”
Ankou squinted waryily before looking back up to the twosome and nodding. The Ridgeback and Obelisk turned and headed towards a towering structure in the distance, Quin, Ankou, and Sashimi in tow.
Ankou mumbled under her breath just so the other two could hear, “Seems like tonight’s celebration will be greater than normal. . . .”
