Take a dragon. A violent, ruthless, cunning warrior, a creature of the ice, plagued by a curse that burns her up from the inside. Replace first her failing heart; her scorched lungs; her blackened ribs; and then work your way outward. As flesh and bone is slowly replaced by metal and wire and carbon fiber, does the dragon remain? And the curse?

Astrin no longer troubles herself with the Ship of Theseus. Everyone changes. What difference does it make, if her body slowly changes with her? If the form she takes shifts with time, little pieces of metal discarded and replaced? Cells in a living creature die and are replaced countless times. Nobody is the same today as they were yesterday. Within a month, the skin you wear will be entirely new.

It doesn’t matter what she’s made of. She is Astrin. She is Head of Security. She keeps her people safe.

And yet... the curse. It's neutralized within the boundaries of the Vigilance, but once she leaves the safety of the pylons, that same burning flares up. It's controlled now. But she can still feel it, faintly. There's a thermal power generator buried in her core to put the curse to good use, and cooling systems run through the rest of her body. She's too cold to the touch, even for a machine. A thin sheet of ice forms on her scales every time she comes back from the water. And still, somewhere deep in her core, it burns.

Perhaps she hasn't changed enough.
