L E I T N E R

the tanner
╭━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╮
Light flickers - a dull, warm glow cast from candles that perpetually drip wax onto the cobblestone floor. There's a sound emanating from the darkness; a soft paper-like flutter. It comes from a dragon who walks quietly down the corridors, his form pale and ghostly with a velvet mane of downy, beige fur trailing behind.

Iron and wood loom ahead - a great door embedded into the tunnel walls. The dragon produces an old iron key, inserting it into the lock with a resounding click as he turns. Echoes of a dull creak reverberate through the tunnels as the door slides open.

There's a workshop inside. In contrast to the dark catacombs, the room is surprisingly well lit, the scent of tanning agents and freshly worked leather hanging upon the air. It is here that Leitner fashions his wares - gut strings for instruments and stretched sheets of leather destined to form book covers.

He must work quickly. Despite his light coloring, Leitner's claws are stained darkly with blood. He sifts through viscera, severing arterial and venous attachments as he dismantles the carcasses brought to his workshop by a mute, cowled drake. Occasionally there are deer, or elk that find their way to Leitner's workshop, but far more often the Imperial looks down onto more familiar forms. He affixes a silver blade to his claws, sliding it through scales and flesh as blood pools from his incisions. Dragon's blood.

Everything has its place in Leitner's workshop. He keeps the hide, and the intestines for his own wares, setting aside any remaining viscera on a massive, silver platter. He does his best to clean the bones, ridding them of muscle and tendon before placing the skeletons into a dark, dry pantry attached to his workshop. Insect legs chatter as a colony of dark beetles scuttle over the bones, stripping them of any remaining flesh.

The parts are passed off after that. Leitner's mentor comes to take the leather, along with the silver platter piled with organs and sliced meats. Another kindly Imperial comes for the bones, the scent of dried berries and leaves clinging to her form as she thanks him with a smile. Then Leitner is alone once more.

There's a faint fluttering of wings, then the violent hiss and snap of a moth burning in flames. Leitner lurches awake. He always has the same dream; watching insects leap into the light of a flickering candle before burning into black dust. He wakes up ragged, breathing heavily as a chill sets shivers across his scales.

Leitner has no memories of a time before the Cathedral of Eyes. Indeed, the massive, looming spires of limestone and the dark cobblestone passages have always been his home. He was raised by the Librarians after Hannibal found him wandering in the woods; an unusual hatchling with dust fine scales and moth like wings surrounded by the shattered remains of a glass jar. He speaks little, preferring instead to observe the world in silence through pale, arcane eyes.

He watches as the carcasses pile upon his table. As the deceased are reduced to bones and leather bindings and fashioned into the hundreds of books that line the library's walls. Indeed, the library itself is unthinkably large, an expanse of infinitely spiraling staircases and winding shelves centered around a golden plinth. These books contain the stories of the dead, their memories preserved against time upon the ink-stained pages. But Leitner never reads. He is content without stories of the past.
