It had begun with two dragons - Wemba and Trendal, who had gone seeking their lost explorer friend Magnu who had not returned from his expedition to the Dripcave Dregs. He had been seeking treasures but so close to the fortress of ends he risked the wrath of the wardens that guarded it. His friends feared that he had been captured and despite the danger, they could not knowingly abandon him.

Their trek was difficult and when they reached their destination they decided to rest within a cave. They awoke to loud noise and then found themselves pursued tirelessly until they landed in a trap and lost consciousness.

When they awoke they faced the Icewarden's first creations - gaolers - bound to contain the horrors he had trapped in the ice. They had been out of contact with the outside world since their creation. When they encountered Wemba and Trendal they believed them to be shade-touched and though they had healed the travellers they were suspicious and did not trust them. It was only after finding out that Wemba was born into the southern icefield and 'blessed by the icewarden' that they realized that neither she nor her companion were shade-touched.

Still, they could not ignore the scent of the shade on these outsider dragons and called for a gathering of their clans. After some deliberation, they agreed that they could no longer stay isolated in the face of the shade that threatened the world. They reinstated an order that had once gone to the surface to hunt and capture shade creatures; the seeker order. For the first time since they had been created the gaolers would venture beyond the southern icefield and become part of the modern world.

With all of this having happened the Gaolers had already begun to emerge into the modern world. They joined modern clans in order to spread their resources and fight the shade all across sornieth. Because they had been isolated for so long though, their population was not large enough to do this effectively and so they needed to find ways to increase their numbers.

To solve this they uncovered magic and knowledge they had not used for centuries. Ages ago they had sought the assistance of the icewarden. Their numbers had been dwindling and they needed more dragons or else they faced extinction. Through his magic the Icewarden was able to create scrolls that would change a modern dragon into a gaoler and he passed this knowledge on to his first children.

They had used these scrolls to expand their numbers by changing the breed of hatchlings within abandoned ice element eggs they found. Very rarely, they would also use these scrolls upon lost travellers if they swore secrecy or allowed themselves to be given false memories to forget their lives in the outside world.

The gaolers began to create these scrolls once more and they spread them across sornieth. Initially, they only allowed dragons who swore an oath to fight the shade and agreed to follow their traditional customs to use these breed scrolls. Eventually though, they became more lenient and even taught modern dragons how to create these scrolls. As a result, the Gaolers spread and their population increased. And now, modern dragons were able to become something ancient should they decide to do so. An ancient breed was back, no longer confined to myths of the past.

Born into the Southern Icefield, Swiftfang was separated from his parents shortly after hatching. A bleak white-out storm had rolled in and in the chaos, they lost sight of him. Scared and Confused he stumbled through the storm. He was not built for the cold and the chill seeped through his scales until he felt as if his insides had turned to ice. Eventually, he could go no further and collapsed in the snow.

He was found by the Gaolers, though this was before Wemba and Trembal would stumble upon them and change the course of the modern world. Naturally, they did what they had always done with young lost travellers and hatchlings. They turned him into a Gaoler, and gave him memories that would erase his past in the outside world.

The hatchling awoke nestled somewhere soft and warm. And as he looked up at the dragon beside him, meeting her ice-blue eyes, he felt only comfort nestled at his mother's side. His true parents were forgotten, and he was no different from any dragon who had been born a Gaoler. Save perhaps for his multitude of eyes.

From a young age name's perceptiveness was very apparent. He was watchful and clever with an excellent memory and he seemed notice even the slightest changes. This trait was particularly influenced by his extra eyes, though, he possessed a steady calmness and a sound mind as well.

All of this combined made it easy for him to choose an order. He had all the natural qualities a sentry required and he was expected to be highly successful. He liked the clarity of his path, and he felt a deep sense of purpose in pursuing work that suited him. He had already begun training in his chosen order when everything changed.

Learning of the outside world upset everything he believed, he had no memory of his true history after all. He might've learned to ignore it and continue on his original path but things were different now.

Even though they saw the need, many of the older Gaolers were hesitant to abandon the posts they'd held for so long. Most didn't want to be seekers and due to their seniority they had more freedom to choose. Many younger Gaolers, especially those who had secretly come from the outside world had far less freedom.

name and many other young Gaolers were told that they must become seekers. The need was dire and the older Gaolers reasoned that the younger dragons would find it easier to adapt to this change. name was naturally distressed but bound to his duty, so with the direction of his leaders he ventured out into the modern world.
