Yearly Awakening Is it the moon that wakes her? Is it the sun? Is it the oppressive heat of a late summer gone on too long? The fireflies drift low in the heavy air, signaling each other in their yearly dance, pulsing green like the pulse of life that wakes in her. She stirs. She has been still, but it is a new year again and her duties call her, a pull in her chest which she cannot deny. Her joints creak as she moves, pulling free of the fresh greenery and lush vegetation that has grown up around her in her slumber. She exhales a sweet, cool breath and it seems to be felt around the forest. The leaves rustle, and the very creatures quiet to listen, for their instincts tell them that it is time to prepare. She takes another breath and releases and one more, stronger gust sweeps the land, bringing a chill with it. Hesperia, the reaper of Summer, bringer of Autumn, begins to feel alive. With her life comes the death of Summer, although in this case death is but part of a cycle and a new beginning. With each step she takes, she leaves a wake of dry, browned grass and flowers that have ceased to bloom. She seems to drip death and decay onto everything she touches. This may seem sad to some, but to Hesperis, it provides great joy. Light from her body touches the tips of leaves, turning them glorious colors. Drops of vital fire lick at crops as she passes, ripening them for harvest. She is not a god. She is just a very, very old dragon with very potent magic. She has few possessions, unlike most dragons of her age and stature, but those she chooses to keep are precious to her. She drapes herself in the bones of animals that pass during her ministrations, honoring and remembering their loss and knowing the cycle of death and rebirth is essential. She wraps herself in a crimson cloak, symbolic of the cloak of Autumn she drapes across the land, pulling it with her as she slowly walks southward, bringing a blanket of cold. And she carries a jagged, rusted cleaver. And with it, every year, she kills Summer itself.
