-marauder- -warrior- -scoffer/skeptic- -loner-

These were Four's definitions for a long time. The list completed him. He lived on the outskirts of the clan, doing all the things they found too unpleasant to do themselves. He was often off on adventures, coming back with tales that he tamed down around the edges to enthrall the hatchlings, and, though they wouldn't admit it, quite a few of the adults. He had earned Histan's respect in battle early on, and that's what kept him his place in the clan. He was comfortable, cracking bones by himself, and laughing at the silly pleasures of those who lived, as he called it, "Indoors."

He wasn't completely alone though. He had two "sometimes" companions. One of them was Costiel, who would sometimes join him on raids. He had enough angst built up inside to want to sometimes get out and do something destructive with all that energy, and escape from underneath the family ties that held him captive, even if it was a temporary release. The other one was Rai. Four wasn't so sure about her at first, but she proved herself witty enough to hold a place at his campfire. She'd been blessed with a good dose of sarcasm too, as well as holding common ground in the "hatched from an abandoned egg with no known parents" arena. Lucifix also held this ground, and Rai got along well with him (some forgot that they weren't siblings, actually), but some reason, Four couldn't stand him. Whether it was discrimination against Mirrors or the difference between similar jobs that were carried out in very different manners, Rai could never find out.

SBoth his "sometimes" companions had better and more constant relations with the clan though, which kept him sticking out like a sore thumb, while they blended in at the seams. They rarely slept out by his fire at night, though Rai would take up guard position if he was gone. He'd given the task to her before Lucifix could get it into his head that it was his duty to take it.

What he didn't know, was that Rai was scheming behind his back. She did not seem the matchmaking sort, but she had a friend, Lastame, who'd had eyes on Four ever since he'd come back from his first adventure. She was a little older than him, but what was a year in dragon years? Absolutely nothing, they both agreed. So Rai began bringing Lastame along sometimes to their campfire nights. Four was rather put off at first. What was this shy little Fae dressed up in Nature garb doing by his fire? But once she warmed up, he began to understand why she and Rai got along so well: they had the same sharp, fiery wit.

It was Lastame who added to his descriptive list. She liked to tease him by calling him "A big 'ol teddy bear," at which he would let out a great dismissive huff, which, if she was near enough, would send her tumbling head over heels through the air, laughing gleefully, until he would also laugh; a deep chuckle, way down in the back of his throat. Soon, she was coming all by herself. Sometimes he would even find himself calling to her telepathically to see if she wasn't too busy to go exploring with him. The great Four, lonely? Unheard of! But the way she listened when he talked, the way she could carry on in fierce passion about something she cared about... it was winning him over. And he wasn't sure that he liked it.

He first noticed that things between him and Lastame were changing when they were all four together one evening, and he and Lastame were teasing each other. Costiel had paused, with an odd expression on his face, as if he were noticing something that he should have before, and was trying to decide how he felt about it. Four stopped as soon as he saw it, and crouched down to blow on the fire to make it jump and spit, making Costiel jump back, breaking his revere and causing everyone to laugh. And when they had all finished laughing, Four launched into one of his adventure stories (one that wasn't hatchling safe) to continue the distraction.

He spent all of that night brooding over Costiel's expression, and what it meant. He was torn. He had a reputation to hold up. He had to be independent, able to cut ties and disappear for long lengths of time whenever he felt the need. And Lastame would allow this, no matter what was between them, he was sure. But there might come a time when he would not allow it of himself. He shivered. Children. That's what having a mate meant, after all. Him, a father? He couldn't imagine it. Also, it would require him to make closer ties with the clan, further limiting his freedom. He couldn't do it. Things with Lastame would have to stay right where they were, and go no further. She would have to understand... he became silently angry at Rai for getting him into all this. Feelings. Humph. He didn't have time for such things.

But Lastame had other plans. And in the end she had him, all of him, hook, line, and sinker; and she knew it. In the end, she slowly rewrote him. And before long, he was realizing that his list needed changed.
-marauder- -warrior- -lover- -father- -fierce protector- -skeptic
(...except when Lastame tells him he should reconsider, at which he does,
and maybe considers that perhaps she's right.)-
And strangely, every freedom that he has given up has somehow made him feel freer, and every notch of pride he's let go of has made him stand taller.

____When the plague hit, it took Lastame with it. Four had tried to tell her to stay away, to stay in their camp, to at least leave the nursing to others... "There are sick hatchlings, Four. Someone has to look after them! It might as well be me." But sitting alone by his campfire, reliving again and again the moment when the last breath left her body, all he could repeat, through his tears, was, "It didn't have to be you. It didn't have to be you."

____She had made him believe in others, trust others, care about others. She's made him a father. Given him a higher purpose. He had given her security, made her believe in herself, pulled out the things she tried to keep locked up inside, inspired her to hope in the future. Made her a mother. And now she was gone, and he was broken. More broken than he had ever thought it possible to be.

____Sareness was his one comfort. Most of their children had gone off to serve the Arcanist as warriors and scholars, but Sareness, who looked so very like him, had stayed. She cared for her father when he couldn't remember how to care. She cleaned up his camp and made him come with her to pick flowers. She made him talk, made him grieve. Would talk to his ears off about all the things she was learning about tanning from a dragon in the clan next to them, about her dreams of starting her own tanning shop, about all the things she would make.

____She made him hurt because she reminded him of her mother. She made him laugh because she reminded him of himself. She made him heal, because she reminded him that there was still a life to live, and dragons to live it for.

____She taught him that there is beauty, even in pain.
