 Malv was supposed to be powerful.

They were born into a lineage long and golden and broiling with magic of all sorts. Before they'd even hatched, Malv was enrolled to train their magical abilities. But even after a decade, bonebreaking effort, and ceaseless disappointment, Malv failed to produce so much as a puff of smoke.

Some suggested they simply try harder. Moonstone urged them to find a different calling--stop chasing the impossible--find a different happiness. But Malv saw it two ways: they would be the first of their bloodline to fail, or the first dragon ever to solve the problem of being born without the gift.

There must've been a reason. And there must've been a way to correct this cosmic oversight.

In the city on the hill, only Ioa knew that Malv had never cast a spell. That just meant they would be uniquely motivated, and that's what she needed at the head of the academy. And Malv never once let her down, steering the clan's arcane studies with unflinching persistence.
