A Tale of Bonds Forged

I sit within the light of the candle, watching the dragon before me as she riffles through a pile of scrolls before her. To most dragons, or at least in most places, the pile would seem excessive. However, in this den in particular, the pile was relatively small. I would have been offered a seat if any had been spared by the piles of information that didn’t fit on the shelves. Some shelves are taken by massive tomes easily written by Imperials, while others are filled row upon row with tiny bindings only a Fae could write in easily. Some scrolls are small slips of paper, while others could easily become a valley to the small Spirals to fly about. Some hold maps, charts, and ley lines. Others hold incomplete fragments of stories long lost to time. I would know, seeing as this is our third week here.

The Imperial stops, finding a scroll no bigger than her claw. I can see her pull up the looking glass to read over the old text once again. At this point, I believe she can recite the words by heart, but I know she wouldn’t appreciate my input. Not here, at least. According to her, the words are practically gibberish, most certainly completely meaningless, and yet she doesn’t put it down. I understand why.

That scroll is one of the few pieces we have on the Siren of the Dawn, and she’s been hunting him down her entire life. She tells me what she deems necessary, and I accept as much, but she doesn’t know how much I already know on the poor drake who’ll end up becoming the Siren, or what I know of the original Siren for that matter. I plan to keep it that way. It would do me no good to tell the frustrated Imperial what I know about Nerites and the signs of his ensemble’s formation. He may bear a different name now, but all that remains of the old stories call him that.

I’m jarred from my thoughts when the Imperial sets down the scroll, peering at me. She seems akin to steel covered in silk, meaning to say she seems as close to soft as a sword is soft. I do my best not to move, not to even bat an eye. I keep my post by the door, head held high as I listen for any signs of trouble. I wait for her comment, the words that I know are coming.

“Do you think Halley knows enough to give us some insight?” Well, that is new. I see a small quirk to her lips as I blink at her. She believes I’m utterly shocked, but I know how to reign my emotions better than she knows. A blink does not always mean shock to me, and I would think she had learned as such by now. Before I can reply, she shakes her head, turning back to the pile. “No, we must search alone.” I want to tell her that is ridiculous, that she can trust the brown-cloaked Coatl, but I know I cannot. Some would want to destroy the Siren of the Dawn before we can reach him, and that would spell disaster for our kind. Since we cannot tell who would betray us, we must indeed search alone. It takes me a moment to notice she has stopped shifting through the pages.

“My Gaidin, do you remember your vows?” This time, it is surprise. I give a simple nod, but refuse to give her the dignity of a spoken answer. Dragons like us never speak of those vows where the wrong ears can hear, and that includes the little study we’re in. However, I cannot forget those vows, where I gave up my Search for a Charge. She knew a spell to tie me to her, and in exchange my Charge would be decided instead of an unknown I might never find. I’d live longer, be stronger, and have heightened senses as well as a bond with the Imperial, and she would hardly be touched by time in return. When I spoke those words, when she cast that spell, my Charge became her cause, and through it, her. After a moment, she sighs, putting a book atop the small scrap of parchment she had been reading.

“I believe we should rest for the night, Gaidin. It is getting late, and we’ll need to restock our supplies in the morning. I hear that a ship with some Java Sparrows will be arriving in the morning, and I haven’t had roasted Java wings in quite some time.” I close my eyes, frowning. She seems to believe I will drop my walls because of her words, but I won’t. I push myself away from the wall, not even looking back at the Imperial I can sense behind me.

“It is called the Silver Raven, Oribi, and I won’t let you lay your claws on a single Java feather. You still need to break that addiction. Perhaps some Mint will suit you better.” I let my mouth quirk into a slight smile as I glance back at her. I can see her adjusting her blue shawl, and while she looks calm, I know I struck a nerve. “I’ll make sure Halley knows not to let you buy those Sparrows while I practice my forms.” I know she’ll head straight out to the port town with golden coins in hand, but I work faster than that. The guards at the docks know her face and her name. She can’t buy a thing without me, but it is always worthwhile to err on the safe side of things.

Adjusting my sword, I make my way to Halley’s study, ready to inform her of Oribi’s plans. As her Warder, I cannot let the girl be so reckless, and I can sense her fury as I leave her in the study. By the time I have everything pulled together, I see Oribi has returned from what I know to be a small flight, and the look in her eyes is more than enough to tell me all I need to know.

I can still see the flickering candlelight in the study window as I practice with the sword beneath the moonlight. I refuse to let her see my smile. After all, she is my Charge, and I her Warder Gaidin.
