Dying Is an art, like everything else.
There's an old belief in certain places in the world that when a loved one dies, if you scribe your fondest memory of them onto a lantern, and let it fly on the wind, that their spirit will fly with it, perhaps even to come back to you. Pay careful attention to all you see and hear, no matter how unusual it must seem.

Milashe dies. A storyweaver would tell you that she died nobly, turned herself into a phoenix to protect. It is a story, and it is a story I shall choose to pass on. Lanterns are lit for her, orange paper covered in patterned scribework. She is loved, and the lanterns form a river of orange paper, twisted and carried by the winds. Nobody is sure what causes them to ignite in the air, purple blazing flames jumping from paper to ink, and again. Ashes rain down, pieces of memories burning.

Elsewhere, flame catches once more. Bright, bright, too bright to be true flame. It traces a line down ridges and scaled flank, sealing wounds. A slow, heavy heartbeat begins once more, as flames darken to purple red, and flow like water over the still body. And then they flare, and a dozen eyes flash open, fireheart orange.

Milashe lives, and the first thing she sees is an unfamiliar creature. She sees it from too many angles, it makes her head hurt. "You can't go back you know." It tells her, it's voice a lilting singsong of a summer brook. The air tastes like heady sunshine and ashes. "You have been reborn, and there's beauty for you, all of the beauty you could see. You are in the ruins, and there is a home awaiting if you can find it. It will not be the same, but it will be a place you can be happy, and rest." She wants to protest, to speak against this creature of sun, but it presses a tiny hand against her mouth, and it feels like summer pressed into a single point, almost too hot for even her fire hardened scales. "This is a second chance, Milashe Fire-Born. Do not squander it." And the creature is gone.
