VideniXXXXXXXXXXXXXXWarrior Escort To Be a Warrior Videni panted, lying exhausted on the sun-baked earth. Her pink scales were covered in a sheen layer of sweat, and her muscles cried out in agony for her to rest. Still she pulled herself up, standing on shaky legs, putting one foot in front of the other. She had to get it right. She couldn’t disappoint. She crouched, tension building in her hind legs. Hissing, she leapt again at the training dummy, bringing down her entire weight behind the slash of her claws. One singular strike. The doll went limp, straw spilling from its disembowelment. Yet, it still stood. The Elimination was incomplete. The Mirror let out a frustrated groan, collapsing on her back. The sky, which had the orange-pink tint of dawn when she started, was now blue, shining with the heat of the afternoon sun. All that time, and she had gotten nowhere. She swore that she tried everything, from aerial assaults to shoulder bashing. Every technique that she saw her mentor do, she attempted to replicate, to no avail. She attempted to move her arm, to get up. She had to try again. She scuffled to her hind legs, standing for a few seconds before they gave way. She sighed, her head lying on the heated ground. Her body was too worn to do anything else. She looked on at nothing in particular, wondering if she was the wrong choice. Of all the young recruits that could have been selected from Serenity Labs, she was the one. There were others who were bigger, more talented, more intelligent, but he picked her. Karinor, of the famous Wanderers took her on as his apprentice, to learn the skills of combat, and become a warrior just like him. The day she was chosen, she couldn’t breathe, excitement and trepidation filling her chest until she wanted to burst. Nothing could compare to the sheer giddy elation of that moment. His skills were the real deal, and he had earned his place as a legend. Almost every beast he found would be felled by a single crush of his claws, his hide of stone repelling those who would harm his charge. Most important of all, he always kept his spirit, never yielding to despair, giving hope to those he protected. That was what she admired most about him. She remembered those days sitting with Wernerae in the den, as the messenger-dragon would spin yarns of the Wanderers. That would be her one day, she thought. Yet, it looked like that dream would never be. “Videni? Where are you? You left your breakfast!” Her mentor’s voice, calling from the reeds snapped her from her brooding. No, she couldn’t let him see her like this. She shook her head clear of the intruding thoughts, and plastered on a smile. “Over here, by the the training grounds! I, er, might need a little help here.” as she called back, the Guardian entered. His armor was ajar, and the stain of berry syrup was still on his lips. Videni couldn’t help but feel a sting of resentment. He could just sleep in without a care, while she was training herself from dawn to dusk. He was the legend, while she was just the shoddy imitation. His brow was furrowed in concern, surveying the numerous dismembered dolls and spilled straw. She felt her face burn with shame, her lack of progress on display. Was he judging her? He gently lowered himself to her level, hoisting the young Mirror onto his back. Videni allowed herself to be lifted, resigned to return later. As they travelled, the silence was uncomfortable, the short journey back to the Guild stretching on and on. Videni bit back her tongue, searching for the words that were out of reach. “I’m sorry!” she blurted out. She clamped her claws back over her mouth, but it was too late. Karinor’s ears perked, his head tilted in confusion. “Sorry for what? Is something wrong?” Karinor asked gently. Videni stopped, unsure of what to say. She felt a whirlwind inside, pulling her this way and that. They were alone here, away from the bustle and prying eyes. There might not be another chance. She gathered herself, and spoke. “I’m...I’m sorry I failed you. You put so much faith in me to succeed and I just couldn’t do it. You saw back there, I tried and I tried and it just doesn’t work!” She shook a claw back in the direction of the field exasperatedly. She could feel her eyes begin to sting. “You keep managing to get up and smile, no matter what happens. You keep going and going, and you succeed every time. I...I want to be like you, but what if I can’t? I’m just a weak, stupid failure of a warrior who can’t do a simple trick right!” Every anxiety, every bottled up feeling of inadequacy was released. Tears flowed unbidden, her body shaking as she wept. Karinor set her down on a rock, before pulling her into a tight embrace. She let him, crying into his shoulder. Slowly, the Guardian let her go. “Hey, it’s alright. Do you know why I chose you?” The Mirror sat up, wiping away the tears from her eyes. She shook her head. Her throat locked up, unable to answer. He put a firm claw on her shoulder before continuing. “It’s because you have the heart. You can be strong in muscles, but have no heart for battle, or for helping. It’s trying that’s important. You will get there, I know it. Besides,” The Guardian said, smiling, “If you get up at three in the morning to train for ten hours, you’re definitely at least as crazy as I am. You fit right in!” He gave a bellowing laugh, and the young mirror couldn’t help but chuckle. “C’mon, let’s get some food. You down for meat stew?” He beckoned her along, letting her lean on him as they walked. Videni breathed in and out. The knot of uncertainty was still there, but it felt looser. She felt lighter, faster, the weight of guilt and shame relieved. It might take her a year, or a lifetime. Maybe she wouldn’t be just like him. It didn’t matter. Videni was a Warrior, and nothing would change that. |
"You never really realize how far you've come until you look back at it." Fun Facts Has an extensive record of the adventurers of the Wanderers in her journal. Especially specific for Karinor. Even as an adult, she enjoys hunkering down for storytime with milk and cookies. Responsible for the rule that mentors need to be present in training due to dummy consumption.
