Star's Wish

The land was scarred, pockmarked with craters, and marred with burns. The still air was cold, frozen in its quiet vigil. Where resplendence and greenery once stood, there was only waste, charred black, a monochrome testament to the folly of pride. There was nothing left.

Amongst the blackened pillars and ash, a figure stalked. She moved silently, careful to leave nary a mark on the blasted ruins. Slowly she paced, observing each crumbled wall, each shattered pillar, as if remembering a time long-gone. She paused at a crumbled alcove, pink crystals reduced to fragments, a small bed of grass decayed from disuse. She instinctively reached out a claw, before stopping herself. There would be nothing to borrow. Not this time.

As the shining gems graced the sky, staining the ground with shadow, she came to her destination. The ground was gouged out before her, with not even ruins left. As she walked down, the ashen earth became clearer, until it was smooth as glass. She felt a prickling along her body, as luminous purple light flickered to life on her scales, glowing brighter and brighter. Even now, the invisible touch of magic left its mark.

Tattooed with the evidence of her failure, Lencho sat at the bottom of the crater. From her pack, she extracted an array of forgotten treasures; A dirt-stained doll, a shattered horse, an incomplete set of blocks. She laid them before her, a sizable collection, borrowed from many a time. She breathed, and looked up. The stars shined brighter that night, looking down upon the visitor.

“Do you see them? They are beautiful this time of year.” Lencho asked. There was not a sound, the air as still as it was, holding onto a breath from years before. She drew a breath and continued, “They say that here, when the stars bear witness, dream and reality blur, and wishes are heard,” she solemnly lowered her head. “I have come many a time, and wished for you to return, to come back beyond the veil. I took from you, clinging onto the precious memories that were once yours. I return them now, where they should have always been. I...am sorry.” Gently she let each of them go, losing them once again. Slowly she stood, head lifting to face the sky. She paused, and spoke.

“Tonight I come with a different question. I know that the past must be left behind, but please listen, for just a little while longer. What would you have wished of me?” Silence. The stars continued to glimmer, absorbing the desperate wish into themselves. Lencho continued to look, observing those familiar patterns in the sky. She waited, hoping that once, just once, someone would listen. She closed her eyes, resigned. It was foolish to wish for the impossible.

It was slight, almost imperceptible if she hadn’t been so still. The air seemed to shift, gently caressing her face. In her mind’s eye, Lencho saw a little one, his fuzzy paw wiping away those imaginary tears. She saw another running free in the wide starscape. Another pair was play fighting, rolling around before taking notice. They all approached her, smiling and laughing like nothing had changed. She saw them one last time, before they disappeared into blackness. Lencho opened her eyes, and saw the stars once again. The Ridgeback blinked back her tears, relishing that last touch as it faded away.

“...I understand. I know what needs to be done. I will move on, and live the life that was robbed from you. Thank you...for everything.” She turned her back, stalking away from her former home. The land remained bleak, barren save for those scraps of childhood in the dust. Yet, the stars seemed to be a little brighter, carefully watching over that which was left behind.
