Gausto was forged of terracotta and hate. When the nature life force was poured into him, his great body stirred to destruction, tearing down walls with clay teeth and shredding stone with hardened claws. But nature was his downfall: a weaponized seed, shot straight into his heart by the academy's best marksman. The roots brought him into slumber, and he was sealed into a forgotten garden for his energy to wane until he was merely a pile of forgotten porcelain.

Amaranth and Glacia found his grave garden before the tree could sap his last energy. They awakened the beast, resparking the mana. They did not know of his destructive past hundreds of years before.

Thankfully, that was not necessary information. The great golem was so surprised by Glacia's insistence on friendship, that friendship grew in the meantime. Unexpectedly, Gusto found a place in the artifice school, in the University, and in the world. They took his anger and replaced it with a fierce protection of the things he had once despised.

Gausto still resides in the garden that was his jail, but frequently helps Amaranth tend to the tamed flowers and fruits that flourish there.

Glaicia peered gingerly around Amaranth's steady shoulder. One they had found the door to the forgotten garden, it was quite easy to make their way in. Amaranth gave Glacia an assuring look and proceeded through the brush that had encroached on the entry way over the years.

Glacia didn't say anything, but did her best to keep her clothes from snatching on the feral roses. Amaranth was already forging ahead boldly, making a rough path through the brush.
"Why did I come along..." Glacia complained. Nonetheless, she pushed through to the clearing where Amaranth now stood in awe.

Overhead, the vines and trees tangled together in a watertight bower, lit by the green glimmer of the sun through the waving leaves. The borders of the clearing were coated in vegetation of all types, castinn shadows on the walls somewhare beyond.

Almost as if perfectly scripted, a pile of teracotta lie in the center, illuminated by a single beam of light onto the tree which had taken root into the crumbling clay.

"They kept this in here." Glacia said, circling the broken-down construction. Coming around the huge mound of what she suddenly realized were shoulders, she found herself staring into the dormant face of a golem.

"They sealed it in here." Amaranth said.

"You spend far too much time in the library, my dear." Glacia said, peering closer to study the cracked exterior of the golem.

Amaranth shrugged, studying the tree that had grown into the golem's terracotta back. Its roots had reached deep into the construction. If they'd reached the Heart, this golem would no longer move again.
"Should we get it moving, then?" Glacia asked. "The Artifice School will love this."

Amaranth looked the thing up and down again.

"If it can even still move." Glacia continued, touching the motion rune that allowed the construct to control its body.

Green eyes snapped open, staring a surprised Amaranth in the face. Amaranth sprung back, making a bouncing landing on his powerful back legs.

In a voice like two slabs of granite grating against each other, the construct spoke. "Just leave me be. The tree is already near my heart. It will kill me soon enough."

Glacia was the first to recover from the surprise. "That will not be a problem." She said, certain of her own skill.

"They sealed it away..." Amaranth thought aloud.

"That is correct." The golem said. "I found myself with my own will and cursed those who created me. What a poor choice. Don't fight a mage." It said sagely, closing its eyes in exhaustion.

"Don't move." Glacia said. She expertly lifted off the plate that hid the golem's heart, its source of power and energy.

The golem opened its eyes once again as Glacia tinkered and Amaranth looked on, but closed them again wearily.

"Use the roots to power the core." Amaranth said.

"Oh, good idea." Glacia commented. "A rechargeable golem is much better."

The golem didn't even open its eyes when Glacia replaced the cover. She even waited a couple minutes (Amaranth in the background eyeing the surrounding vegetation with a glimmer in his eyes.)

"Ugh, get up you lazy lump." Glacia complained, softly kicking the teracotta.

The golem's eyes opened. All of them, all down the length of its body. Its head rose, towering above the spiral. In its voice like a landslide, it spoke.
"Do you wish to awaken an ancient evil so badly? I will not be your servant."

"What? That's ridiculous." Glacia said dismissively. "We're going to be friends."
