Some days he constructs a flimsy raft out of the giant leaves of the trees overhead and rows the body out into the river. Some days he builds a pyre. Other days he lowers a coffin. Every day, he wonders what place death has in such a vibrant landscape. The Viridian Labyrinth's core is entirely made of life. Trees, plants, the animals and the insects—even his clan. Here is a secret he never tells: no one dies in his clan. No one has died, and no one ever will. No matter how many eons pass, how many wounds open, how much blood will return to the soil, the land here will always rewind. Hades sees what he only sees—this land is both blessed and cursed, and perhaps Susumu's magics are what amplify it all. Or perhaps it has always been this way. But this, he knows for fact: the Matriarch knows, more than she thinks he knows. She has always known. After all, Hades himself is part of the land, a mutant desire to live and preserve and strive for what he can never have— Death. |
